I have a computer monitor with s video and cable jack. I plan to hook up a directv box to it.
I want to be able to record tv shows to my computer and then burn to dvd. Can someone please help. Will I still need a capture card or is there a program I can use to save the program or something?
What programs can I use to then edit out the commercials from the saved recording and then to add chapter markers so I can see where each episode starts.
Also, I want to also record the subtitles.
Thanks

The monitor connections won't help you a bit.
If you want to record TV, you'll need a capture card.
If you want to get the subs, you'll need a better card.
To edit commercials, you need software. Most cards come with some basic stuff.
To chapterize, you'll need authoring software. Again, most cards come with some sort.
The Hauppauge PVR-250 and 500 (NOT the MCE version!) will capture, with subtitles, and come with some basic editing/authoring software (Ulead DVD Movie Factory 3).
Because you want to be able to capture subtitles, there are not many cards, nor software that can do it. The PVR-150 cannot.
You will also have to upgrade the capture software to something like GB-PVR, as the default WinTV2000 that comes with the card, is not the best.

The Hauppauge 250 pci card with GB-PVR- I agree - would be your easiest and best bet for tv capping. Plus, you would also have the ability to capture from just about any other source.

WinAVI does not support the Hauppauge cards, nor does it support closed captioning.
