there seems to be numerous ways to mod an xbox and i would like to know what you feel is the best and why. i would like to use xbox linux as well as still play games. i am requesting information not to circumvent the dcm, but to use the box to possibly put in a larger hdd and use it as a small htpc with game functionality.
thanks,
bob

I would suggest going with a Soft-Mod...nothing permanent, you can always UNDO everything, and no soldering needed.
Plus you don't even have to open your Xbox, unless you wanna do the bigger HDD thing.
PS2 v7
Softmod MC Exploit
HDLoader 2.0/HDAdvance 1.0 & 2.1 (MC Versions)
Maxtor 200 Gb Ultra ATA 133 7200 RPM
Xbox w/Samsung DVD Drive
Softmod Evox/Avalaunch
Maxtor 300 Gb Ultra ATA 133 7200 RPM (ATA 133 Cable)
OEM Seagate 10 Gb 5400 RPM

being such a noob, could you point me in the direction of th proper files? or tell me what to search for on google? i really don't have any fears of soldering as i have done that type of soldering back with the ps1. as always, the easiest/best way is always appreciated.
also, with the exception of a actuall solder screw up, is there any way i can "f*ck" up the box software wise that can't be fixed?
AtariBorn i guess i am trying to accomplish what you are doing with the box in your sig with maybe a 80 or 120GB hdd, could you please giv me a quick tutorial on houw you did yours?
thanks in advance ;)

soldering a chip into the xbox is not very difficult at all...if you have soldered before you will have absolutely no trouble soldering in a modchip, probably take you 30min to do...most modchips come with a on/off switch in case you wish to boot the retail bios...softmods cannot be used on xboxlive, modchips you can because you can turn them off...but it is your xbox so mod it as you wish.
each has it's own advatages and disadvantages...a modchip is the best way to go.

Quote: softmods cannot be used on xboxlive, modchips you can because you can turn them off.
If you have a 1.0-1.1 you can split the banks and install a switch between the bios's and you should be able to turn off the 'mod'. I mean,you can use a bios that's 512 instead of 1024 and only flash half the tsop....that way you have 2 bios's to choose from.

I really need someone genius to answer my question. Ok what if, what if someone has a mod chip and could download xbox games and save it on their xbox. I also heard that you can copy xbox games from the internet on a regular cd and copy as a xbox game. Im just wandering, if you know any websites that I can copy real xbox games from and download them on to a regular cd. Please send as soon as possible.

@punqewe
you are right but that wouldn't make it a softmod, that would make it a tsop flash.
@bobromin2
that is piracy, do not ask where you can download games from.

i don't know if the comment was toward me or not, but no reason to get mad and overreact, i was just looking for info on how to get the most out of an xbox, and to even see if i want to put out the $$$ to buy one. most of my gaming is pc and i might make the switch if the xbox can replace my dvd and cd players in my home stereo (denon dts es/dd receiver / mirage surround speakers, simple but can easily hit 110db in the room it is in with no audible distortion whatsoever and plenty of headroom). i am not looking for pirated material, that is not my goal.
i have purchased an xbox but may return it because i make specialized dvds for companys as one of my side jobs - commercial type stuff for trade shows and to send to prospective clients and it seems the xbox does not like ritek dvds, is this uncommon? these are videos i have made in premeiere and encore and are up to correct dvd standards, they work on other dvd players, not the xbox. it is not too impressive when i show a client a finished product and the xbox says that the dvd is not a dvd or cd....

no the comment was not directed towards you...but if someone brings piracy into the forums i have every right to tell him to go f*ck himself.
i know a bunch of people that use ritek discs...your problem probably lies in the fact that you do not have a modded xbox...you need a modded box to play burned movies and games...if you mod your xbox and upgrade the hd, it can be the ultimate mediacenter...sounds like you need to do a little reading on what a modded box can do...mod your xbox and upgrade the hd, then learn how to use it, you will love it...but do with it what you wish.
