Ok...it's making my head hurt..but here's the deal. I'm using the Haup150 PCI card..a SVHS vcr..and Ulead Video Studio 9 to create AVI files for later burning onto DVD. No matter what tape I use..I get an error saying the video cannot be added etc because it's unknown or copy protected. What the..!! I mean...it's the file which Ulead just created..and it cant' open it or edit it? If anyone has any ides, please let me know..thanks in advance!

So many tapes..not enough space..

Well are your Tapes Copy protected?? If they are Store bought Tapes of Hollywood Movies then Chances are that the Tapes are Copy protected in which case you would have to use some sort of Video stabilizer to remove the Macrovsion signal while Captureing....

Thanks for the reply Minion..and nope...I dont' do that stuff...they're my own tapes that I made many moons ago on VHS...all homebrew. The only thing that "seems" to work is using Haup's own software..which is kinda lousy...maybe I should just redo XP, been awhile...lotsa crap loaded. Again, thanks!

Why are you capturing in AVI?
The PVR-150 is a hardware encoding card that will capture directly in mpeg-2 format. No need to convert, just author using MovieFactory or whatever you like. You are making this WAY harder, and time consuming than it needs to be.

You may not care for the Wintv32 pvr capture software included but it will do the job (quite well in my opinion).

http://www.shspvr.com/... is a great site specific to the Hauppauge PVR cards.

*******************************************************************
Using the tools you already possess, one that is free, and one that would need to be bought (and I highly recommend), here is my process:

1a. Capture using WinTV PVR software using DVD Standard settings
(Don't be concerned about file size at this point)
[Time investment: Real Time Length of the tape]

1b. If editing is needed, use VideoRedo. Easy to use, does not re-encode
video, almost zero learning curve. Does cost $50 to register, but the
best money I have ever spent , and the support is unbelievable.

2. Use Ulead MovieFactory to author menus and add chapters (if desired)
[Time investment: 10 minutes or so]

3. Author using Ulead MovieFactory
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL PATCHES INSTALLED --IMPORTANT!
a. Make sure option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" is checked
in Project Settings (the gear looking thing)
b. Write to a folder (not record to disk)
[Time investment: Depending on size of file about 45 minutes]

4. Use DVD Shrink if the resulting folder will not fit on a single DVD disk
Skip this step (of course) if video fits single DVD disk.
(size should be set to 4.3 GB in settings)
[Time investment: Zero if video fits, aprox. 30 minutes otherwise]

5a. Either set the option in DVD Shrink to burn using Nero (if applicable)
Or, use your burning program of choice to burn final product to disk.
[Time Investment: 15 minutes aprox at 4X speed]

I mpeg, therefore I am.
