maxtor hard drives are the best for ps2's

yes you can put the hdd into a hdd caddy and use usb extreme, however its new technology, runs slower and has less compatability with games

if i was you, just go with the hard drive in the back of the ps2 with hd advance, you will need a network adapter but i presume you have one

hope that helps

Yeah, as far as I've heard too, Maxtor is the best. I guess the official HDD is a relabled Maxtor. :) Of course, if the HDD works, then it works. I don't suppose the brand would matter all that much.

The brand matters, Maxtor is the best. Besides the official Sony 40GB is a maxtor. Western Digital is way to big. It wont even fit in the expansion bay. Go for a Maxtor 120. i have noticed in Canada that it is usually a buck a gigabyte for hard drives.

I just bought a Western Digital 80GB for $20 from best buy!! and yes it takes...15 mnitues of your time to mod it to fit. All you do is:

(this is somebody elses comment from a PS2-HDD site)
***Make sure you have the hard drive on cable select (mine was set that way out of the box). If you dont know what that means look at the top sticker on the hard drive and look at the diagram and make sure it is set to that.***

1. You will have to modify the network adapter a bit. Unscrew the bottom two screws so it allows you to bend the bottom tin protective peice (heat shield) back so the bottom connections are exposed. It will be neccessary to snip away of the tin that covers the two bottom connectors to make the modification possible. Use some tin snips or some real sharp scissors like I did.

2. Remove the two screws that connect the power connector to the rest of the netowrk adapter (4 holed jobbie to your left if you are looking at it).

3. When it is unscrewed you will be able to spread the power connector more to the left which will give you just enough room to plug the hard drive into the network adapter.

4. Once you know it fits, disconnect the hard drive from the network adapter and bend the tin that you bent back in the beggining back down if you want or just snip away all of the tin up to the IDE plug-in (the connector that is screwed down higher up on the network adapter) if you wish.

5. Reconnect the hard drive to the network adapter. Slide the hard drive in and screw the network adapter onto the back of the playstation.

That's about it. If I had to do it again it would take me 15 minutes, but took me about 45 minutes the first time as I kinda stumbled my way through it. I hope this helps those that need it. Contact me with questions.

***I own HD Advance 2.0 and this works with this hard drive just fine, recognized it and formatted it in about 30 seconds.***

AND YES, this DOES work

I'm in Canada, and I just picked up a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB with a 16MB buffer for $134 + tax and a usb enclosure for transferring games from my pc for $26.99 + tax. Now I just have to wait for my HDadvance to show up, I got it from gocybershop so hopefully it won't take too long.

i've got a 200GB seagate OEM from www.memorylabs.com. searched pricewatch and found it for 88bux. it fits nicely, and it works. but most ppl will tell you that MAXTOR is the best. it's prob'ly true, but i lucked out with that seagate because the one i used before it won't work as a PS2 drive anymore, but for a PC it's just fine. take it from me, BE VERY CAREFUL with what you do with your drives. you wont be able to use it in your PS2 if you screw it up.
