I've searched these forums but haven't found an answer to this question. Are there any specific reasons to prefer one of these types of media over the other for DVD video burning? It seems that most people use DVD-R, as opposed to DVD+R, but I've never seen a reason why?

Some think -Rs are more compatible with dvd players than +Rs, this is true, but if your burner supports the book type function you can burn your +Rs into DVD-ROMs. Just about everything should play DVD-ROMs. Now I've read that -Rs might possibly be burned as DVD-ROMs as well, but I've never done it

Thanks for the replies. Looks like the biggest difference between the two is whether or not your DVD writer supports one or the other.

I think the big difference is whether your DVD player supports it. I found that the only format my Honda Minivan DVD player supports is -R. In all the other DVD players I have access to, I can play either +R or -R. I find I cannot share +RWs with anyone, so if I want to share a DVD, I have to burn it onto a non-rewriteable format.

I could do this all day...

The main thing is where are you going to play those backups?
They may state they play plus,dash,dvd-rom,etc. But every burner is different just like every stand alone.

Take my 4 pc burners: 2 benq 1620s,khpermedia +8x,and I/O Magic 16x. All my personal stand alones,tv home recorder, and other pc drives can play any of my format backups from my benq's. My khypermedia + only backups wouldn't play on my bedroom apex player. That I/O magic had terrible compatability. My sony standalone plays anything I throw at it,but the apex and lite-on 167t would only recognize the dash format. Both benq's wouldn't recognize any of those I/O backups.

So now,I have a benq in each of my pcs and perfect compatability on my personal drives using either format. However,I have a couple of family and friends players that won't play the benq dash format,so I booktype my plus media to dvd-rom and near perfect compatability on 30+ drives. Only one very old ps2 I found won't play any of my plus/dvd-rom/or dash backups.

That's why it is best to have a quality dual format burner, capable of bitsetting so you can have to option to booktype plus media to dvd-rom. It all comes down to compatability of your backups.

RjKinsman: Rw's are great to practice with, but i have found they are even trickier to play in stand alones.
Good Luck
