In order to discuss about a certain CD-R media, we need to know who made the disc. The brand that the media has been sold under doesn't actually tell us anything yet.

For example the well known brand TDK is usually made by these 3 manufacturers:

1) Taiyo Yuden - very high quality
2) RITEK - very high quality
3) TDK Corporation - sometimes these give problems.

The key for finding the manufacturer is the so called ATIP information, stored in every CD-R disc. And the software that we can use to read the ATIP and copy/paste to this board is the CD-R Identifier. http://cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/cdridentifier.cfm

The information we can dig out with CD-R Identifier looks like this.

ATIP: 97m 32s 00f
Disc Manufacturer: TDK Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 658.74MB (74m 59s 00f / LBA: 337275)

This disc is a bit older TDK REFLEX CDR-74min certified at 12x write speed. We can see that it is made by TDK.

So, in order to ask a question about a CD-R or submit your experiences about a CD-R you will need to:

1) Write complete brand & model of the CD-R
2) Post the ATIP information

In order to keep the board organized it would be nice if discussions about a certain brand, like TDK, would be held under one thread, but the admins will take care of that if you are not able to.

If you have problems with CD-R Identifier, at least the Feurio! is also able to give you the same information about a CD-R disc. http://cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/feurio.cfm

Happy burning folks!

Yes my ASPI Layer is 4.60 for Windows 98 - that's the newest even in the 4.70 setup.

Tried Feurio in December 2001, and I really didn't like it.

Wow, you really came up with alot of rules. AD used to be somewhat of a free forum where you could post your questions and opinions, and usually get answers.

Ghostdog,

Rules? What rules?

These are no rules, man. We simply need the information in order to give answers to your questions.

If someone asks "I just bought a spindle of Cheapodisc Silver 700mb - are they good?", I (or anyone else) can't say anything about them unless I see the ATIP.

If the brand info is inaccurate, then it won't help the other burners out there who go to buy some blanks. You gotta have something to recognize the discs on the store shelf.

Please test the Nero CD Speed, since I am considering it as the new standard for CD-R identification.

The tests indicate that Nero CD Speed actually has a SMALLER manufacturer database than the very old CD-R Identifier. Therefore if a disc is 'unknown' to Nero CDSpeed, then CD-R Identifier may be worth a try.

Nero CD Speed does give you the numeric ATIP code, so if the manufacturer is unknown and you have problems with CD-R Indetifier, then you can try searching with Google (Search for "97m 32s 00f").

There is a great online CD-R database. In German but still usable even if you can't handle the language.
