What are you captureing your Video from?? Meaning are you useing an analogue Capture Card or are you useing a Digital Camcorder???
Whatever you do don"t use the WMV format that WMM tries to make you use....
Are the Videos good quality when they are AVI files but turn bad when WMM encodes them or is the Quality Bad from the Start??

What are you trying to do with your Video"s??? Are you makeing a DVD ???
If you are then after Captureing the AVI file you should encode the AVI files to Mpeg-2/DVD Format useing a Good Quality Mpeg encoder Like "Tmpgenc Pluss"..
Then after encodeing to Mpeg-2 you use a DVD authoring program Like "DVDLab" to add your Menu"s and Chapters and to Burn the DVD...
You Don"t use "Windows Movie Maker" to do any of this because it will only let you render to WMV format which is not a good format and the wrong format for makeing a DVD....
If you have to do some Basic Cut and Paste Editing then you can use something free Like "Virtual-Dub" but if you want to do more complex editing you will most likely have to buy something but there are a few frre editing Programs Like "AviD FreeDV" which is good....

In some cases, WMM will allow you to save your project as DV-AVI. This would be the ONLY thing I would consider, after editing.
I'm not sure if you can have that option, based on the source material.

That option is only available if you Capture from a DV Camcorder or an ADVC Device but any Analogue Capture has to be in WMV format and any Editing has to be rendered to WMV which makes it pretty Useless for DVD Creation...

I just ran a test. Loaded two downloaded xvids into WMM, and saved them as DV-AVI with no trouble (other than the out of sync audio from VBR MP3) ;)
I doubt this would work for capture, but it does work for editing and saving.
Capture in virtualvcr, vdub, or whatever, using something like mjpeg or huffyuv. Import into WMM, edit, and save as DV-AVI, encode.
Better than nothing I suppose.

Well I tried the same thing with a WMV file and it would only give me the option to render to WMV format, There was no option anywere to render to any AVI format...Maybe it only gives that option with AVI files??

Quite possibly, which is fine for the OP, as his captured files are AVI.
It works for me :)

I SUGGEST 'Cucusoft AVI TO DVD VCD SVCD CONVERTOR', I found and bought this software online. It is just like an all in one convertor, and has fast conversion speed, high pic quality and the most attractive thing is it's very easy to use.
