verbatim, ritek, then if you have NO OTHER CHOICE ON EARTH, then the memorex~ :P
if you can't get a hold of TY's locally and it sounds like you can not purchase them online or do not personally WANT to...then, store bought....verbatims is my suggestion to you. i have used ritek in the past with no problems either, they are good media; but, since my TYs came into the picture..i have never looked back~
memorex...i bet they the same as your "vakoss" that i've never even heard of before in terms of quality. while a few (emphasis on FEW) members here still like memorex, i can say from personal experience they really suck and are DEAD LAST on my list of working media. if i had the choice between spending let's say, $5 on a 100 pack spindle of memorex or lunch...i wouldn't think twice bout getting LUNCH~ :P
good luck to you, my personal recommendation if you do end up getting the Verbs is dvd+r 8x media id code MCC003..made in taiwan.
riteks...i used them long time ago, mine were the GO5s..and i had no problems with those either, also made in taiwan.
lastly memorex, w/ the cmag media coding...i use them now as coasters on my tables to keep my cup of coffee from making "rings" on my glass table~ :)
enjoy yourself and welcome to AD. :)

What are the mfg codes on your maxell -4x yellowtops?
They are made by Mxl-rg02/ritek-g04/and taiyo yuden Ty-g01. Recently I found out cmags have produced some of them in the smaller 3 or 5 pack.So their will be a quality difference between them. Maybe your burner's firmware doesn't recognize the specific mfg code from the ones you tried.
Use DVD Decrypter or Nero infotool to find that manufacturers code. You can also download this free version of dvdinfopro here:

kivory,
Bite your tongue. :D Lets put Fuji, Sony, and TDK in there way before we get that desperate. But as you stated, I would also recommend verbatum (azo dye) first.

LOL
actually, i could recommend about 1/2 dozen brands off the top of my head before memorex...since they aren't EVEN on my list of media i would even CONSIDER to buy :)
i guess that is why i said what i said, "if you have NO OTHER CHOICE on earth" (meaning, you have to REALLY backup something and the only source for blank media left on the planet was memorex, THEN, use it~ or just bite the bullet and don't backup anything, since within a few months or sooner, the memorex you chose will eventually equal to something that was never even burned before, it's the same thing really, so, ok..save your money and get yourself something to eat, don't use memorex~ :P)
btw, my made in japan fuji and sony are BOTH TY media, so, i just put them in the TY category that i recommend to everyone~ :)
i forgot about getting into the details of it, but, yes, there you have it~
