nec 3520 locks up g4/g4

i put together a b&w g3 for a friend and outfitted it with an nec 3520 and used patchburn. she's mostly using it for dvd backup purposes, and was successful for a short time. now she's calling all the time and telling me that the drive door is getting stuck and freezing up the entire machine. thinking it was a hardware conflict, i swapped out her hd and the dvd-rw for a g4 400mhz sawtooth i had around. the first disc was fine, and she called the next day with the same problems.

question: has anyone seen this kind of behavior out of an nec drive, and if so, is there a firmware flash i can apply? she's running 10.3.9, and i can't understand why she's able to burn some discs just fine, and then the very same process is crippling the machine at other times.
