Congratulations on entering the confusing and rewarding world of A/V.
Welcome to the forum!
Firstly, much reading is required to get the basics down. I'll attempt to hit some high spots. Some of the answers are in the "Need Help? Read this first" link in my sig.
1.Find the Brand Name/Model of your "set top box" aka DVD Player.
Search the DVD Player section at www.videohelp.com or other site to see if your player is even capable of playing dvd's you burn and which format media it requires, if it is capable. If it is capable, it still may balk at some dvd media brands. See your burners documentation or website to find out what it likes.
2. Use the free software recommended here - lots of guide exist. There are hundreds of software packages out there, don't go willy nilly from one to another. Pick a free one, that is easy to use and learn it.
3. Relax. It is frustrating. I just started doing all this in January and have read days on end to gain the knowledge I needed (and I still stub my toe most days on one thing or another). Newbie is not forever.
4. The more specific information provided by you - the more likely an expert here will be armed to help you.
Congratulations on reading the guides before posting!
Let us know how VSO dvixtodvd works for you.
FYI .mpg is the file extension for mpeg-2

The third tab above "Guides" will answer most of the rest.
