thread is supposed to be 'encoding time > hour' i guess it doesn't like that symbol in the thread title
i'm currently using windows 98, 512k mem, but will try to upgrade to win 2k tonight.
just got a new lite on 1673 and it was making crappy burns with tdk 8x dvd +r, and the tdks were coming out fine in the laptop burns. i tried a sony dvd +rw (made in japan) and the lite on came out with a good burn using that media.
but, the encoding time is taking more than an hour (the laptop encoding time is maybe 15 minutes or so.
i have a dvd rom and a burner (lite-on) on the desktop.
when i use both burners and run shrink, it starts off with encoding, and takes more than an hour. after encoding, it takes about 25 minutes to burn, and i've never seen the lite-on go above 2.5x on the burn.
if i just use one drive, it takes the lite-on about 3 minutes for 'analysing' where the laptop takes less than a minute. then it takes about 25 minutes to decrypt. then, when i run shrink, it takes an hour or more for 'encoding' before it actually starts burning.
i have read through many guides, and use scuba pete's guide and one for using two drives at the same time. i set the target drive to 4300mb, and i never use quality enhancement or anything else, and i usually just do the main movie and cut out all other languages.
dma is checked differently with win 98...i go to device manager, under cd drives, and the dma box is checked for the drives.
i have my op system on the c drive, and my other files on a 60gb d drive. i have defragged both, and run zero spyware, adaware, avg, and zone alarm. zone alarm is the only proggy i keep up when burning.
win 98 uses fat 32, not sure if that's the problem or not.
i've gotten some great advice in some other threads, and it was suggested i make a new thread specifically for the hour long encoding issue.
any ideas?
if i get win 2k loaded, will that help?
i should have 100 pack of verbatims waiting in the mail today to try out win2k burning.
the lite on came with nero, but i haven't used it.
i've been using decrypter/shrink on my laptop for a couple months, but am in no way proficient enough to figure out how to increase the burn rate (set at max) or figure out why my encoding time takes an hour on the desktop (win 98)
thanks for any suggestions
