Does anyone know of a dependable, somewhat decent quality, inexpensive external or internal analog video capturing device?

All I want to do is record video from my analog camcorder onto my pc in a format that I will be able to broadcast over the Internet and copy onto CD; not DVD as I don't have a DVD recorder yet.

avi or mpg, I guess.

I just bought Instant VideoMPX by ADS Tech for $80 but read some reviews that said it was really bad. I havent opened the box yet.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge and help!

What is your computer specs? Since your talking cd not dvd then you'll be looking at VCD or SVCD creation. Have you checked these guides?

I have a P4, 2.66mhz, 512mb Ram, total of 180 gig HD...

I do plan to get a DVD burner soon. But for now, I want to transfer some video from my analog camcorder to a format that can be played on the Internet. I'm guessing a format that Windows Media Player can play as that is probably the player the majority of people have.

Anyone know of a good capturing device? I am currently looking at the ADS DVD Xpress USB 2.0 Video Capture Device and the Turtle Beach Video Advantage PCI.

Any suggestions as to which is better?

Not sure about those but do know that the Plextor ConvertX and the Hauppauge USB work well because they are truely hardware encoding devices. It's much better to seek a hardware capture card instead of one that relies totally on the CPU.

If you have room for PCI, I suggest a Hauppauge PVR series hardware encoding card.

You will get TV tuner, FM radio (in some models), and the ability to do quality hardware encoding with a well supported hardware option.

I tried software encode card, and USB device and I am very happy with the Hauppauge PVR-150 that I bought.

Here why I didn't like software encode and USB. Software encoding and USB both are reliant on the CPU and PCI bus - you can't use your computer during video work or problems ensue.

You may not think you want a tv tuner, but it's addicting being able to watch while you surf and also you can easily set up a home theatre system in the future with free software.
