i need a little advice. i am in the market for a new printer and a dual layer dvd RW drive. I understand that you should not put stickie labels on back up dvds, it could make them "not balanced". so my question is this...is a lightscribe drive the way to go, or use printable media?? if printable media is good, what is a good printer to use to print them?? thanks for the help!

if you use good quality inkjet printables, such as Taiyo Yudens, you should not have a problem. i highly suggest you stay away from sticky labels, what you stated earlier is 100% correct, they deteriorate over time and CAN make the disc become unbalanced.

i personally have an Epson R300, it prints very well on my inkjet printables and there are no problems for playback on my standalones.
just make sure you get GOOD quality printables for your backups.

as to your lightscribe question, i have had no experience with either the lightscribe burners or media, so no comment thus far.

hope that helps a little bit...bottom line, stick with good media on the printables and you should be ok w/ various choice of media printable printers out there...the choice is yours. :P

With today's prices, it is probably cheaper to use printable media. Get a printer with a low cost per page (sorry I am unfamiliar with the current models, but I prefer hp printers - I have an epson and it wastes too much ink during priming before printing).

Consider buying a lightscribe drive so you have the option of using lightscribe when those media become less expensive. Keep in mind that color lightscribe is not currently available.

Lightscribe to me is no advantage over printable media. You cant have colour....and it takes a long time at the minute to complete each DVD/CD. Id much much rather have a good printable disc and print them with the InkJet....

I think LightScribe is awesome. I've seen some of the discs that my brother has made and the detail can't be matched by any inkjet I've seen. They also can't get smudged like some printables are prone to. My brother did a good bit of reading on LightScribe before buying his BenQ and he mentioned that they're already hard at work incorporating color onto the LightScribe media and it'll be backwards compatible with existing LS drives.

The time it takes to burn the label is a downside compared to inkjets but I think the results are very much worth it.

all i can say is:

i love lightsribe.

i never got into the printables.. but when i saw lightscribe.. i loved it.
if you get good at it... the labels look very good.

here's the drive i use:
http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~544797.asp

the media at that site is pretty good price. pack of 30 cdrs for like $20 usd.
like Nephilim, states... it gives you very good detail. and the smudging that you may get with printables is not good..
i'm sure as lightscribe gets used more. the media will be cheaper.

thats my two cents

I've been using sticky labels since I started burning dvd's 2yrs ago, I've never had any balancing problem. I've never even heard such a thing, so that's news to me! I still use sticky labels but in the long run, the more cost effective way is inkjet printable for me. Lightscribe hasn't convinced me it's the way to go and I have friends that have it and still prefer inkjet printable.
Good luck with your decision.

on the whole lightscribe vs. inkjet printables for labeling sisc media - Lightscribe is a great idea but there are few drives HP & BENQ to my knowledge that include it . and the media Either CDR or DVD is at a premium price now like DL media . True inkjet media is more ecpensive than non -inkjet printable media but still less so than lightscribe . Curretnly I'n a sharpie pen kinda guy and that's me . I like the concept of lightscribe and will consider buying a drive with it should both my NEC's Die & or when the media becomes more affordable . Till then sharpie pen Or maybe epson R-200/300 eventaually . Lightscribe is a good technology Yamaha should have invented it it instead of disctt@2 or whatever their version was that burned pictures or words on the record side of the disc but that's a moot point . If you have no gripes with the limmited choice of drives and the price of the media then go for it . As the old saying goes you pays your money and you make your choices ! whatever you choose - Peace & happy burning

heard Something about LIghtSCRIBE media fading on the label side over time anything to this - Also NEC is supposed to come out with a similar system LLS - LASER LABELING SYSTEM that does your design in bright blue NEC-4500A when it's available stateside so this maybe the way to go otherwise it's EPSON R-200 or SHapie pen time - PEACE & HAPPY BURNING!

Any CD or DVD that has been exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time will fade. I think that the quality of LightScribe is clearer and even though it is not out in color yet it is a new technology and eventually it will have color available. I believe LightScribe is the best labeler out there between the sharpie, the inkjet and the stickers.

the media isnt all that expensive for it.
the cds are $20 for a pack of 30.
the dvds are about $1.13 a disk if you get the 10 packs

it will be coming down.. but the best part about the media itself.. it is VERBATIM... which i love using..
