I need some serious help with audio sync trouble

I have been working on these avi files for a long time now. I read on the net of so many ways to fix the trouble with the audio not being in sync when I made it a mpeg 2. I want it to a mpeg not a dvd I dont think. Its tv shows and not movies. I have found so many ways and I tried them all. The extract the audio to a wav and then using the tmpge and then I tried taking the wav and making it a ac3. Then using the tmpge and I suppose to authorize them something like that the m2v and the ac3. Didn't work. Its so complicated can someone please help give me step by step something that will actually work. I am trying to make the season of a show into mpegs to watch on a dvd player they are all on avi's. I need some advice. Thanks.
