Can anyone explain bit rates in simple terms. I currently split 700mb avi files into 2 mpeg-2 files & encode them such that they will each fit on a cd. I do this by reducing the bit rate until it fits. My movies are of a good quality, but will they be better if I burn them to larger cd's or even 3? I'm sure it will, but exactly what will improve????
Cheers

If you encode it for 2 cd's instead of onje the quality will be much better. A vcd is supposed to be 1150kb/s video & 224kb/s audio. This would allow 80 mins of vcd on an 80min disk.

However, If your movie is less than 2 hours (for 2 cds) then if i were you I would encode an SVCD VBR min:300 max:2450 and average:1600kbits/s with 224kbit/s audio. The number off passes the greater the quality! Anything over 6 passes won't improve the quality much more though. This would take a long long time to complete with TMPGEnc though. I use DVD2SVCD with CCE SP(very expensive) and it does it in 5-6hours usually but the quality is amazing. It also allows 60mins on an 80min disk!

If your using DVD2SVCD, use these general settings found in the Bitrate tab folder for 2& 3 cd sets:
Max: 2530
Min: 300
Min. Avg.: Checked (a must)
Max Avg.: 2230
Audio: I use 224 kbps

Set the 1st 3 cd size to 800 and your set to go m8. The more cd's= "usually" the better video quality. Choose multi-pass vbr-3 for DVD2SVCD but you can choose multi-pass vbr-4 but it will take approximatly 33% longer to encode the movie. You have to have a high tech tv to see the "slight" video enhancement. Be sure to use CCE encoder as this encoder produces better video quality than TMP.
