i have a couple of AVI files that i would like to take stills from. is there any specific software i can use to get the best quality stills?

Virtualdubmod.
Open the file, select Video, copy (source or output) frame to clipboard.
Paste into any graphics program (CTRL+V).
If you want to try and improve the look of the frame, you can apply filters as well, in Video, Filters, Add...then you would select copy output frame...
