wow, in ALL my experiences with GENUINE, AUTHENTIC TYs...along w/ my limited knowledge of the KNOWN FAKE ones that i have had the displeasure of using and owning...this one has me completely stumped~ :P
while the GD coding is a sure fire give away whether you got the real deal or not, i have never even heard of that "other number" you mentioned on the clear part...
i know for a fact my FAKE TYS' are missing the GDXXXXX or GGXXXXX number, but, this other "ek4 xxxxxxxxxxx" number you speak of makes them sound sort of suspicious.
fancymojo, have you tried burning with them yet? how are the scans on the logs looking? errors? freezing? pixelation?
i have thousands of the TYGO1s the "value tys" that you speak of...but, not a single of them have that extra longgggg number you speak of.
i can't give you a honest answer until some tests are run and i see the logs~ my own FAKE TYS..the pif scans and error logs were horrible...spikes everywhere and they don't play on my standalones. maybe it's time for me to have a little chat w/ my TY rep. to see if these are real or not~ i'll copy your exact ek4.... number and inquiry about it~ i'll let you know when i find out, in the meantime, let me know how they burn and post logs/scans if you can.

Well, personally I don't see how people can assume that this or that mark determines whether a certain batch of TY's are genuine or not. If they can fake the MIDs, why couldn't they fake everything else?
That being said, the premium ($46) 8x + and -r TYs I bought for three months before the market became flooded with the much cheaper(at least in terms of price) TYs also had a similar code on the inner most plastic hub. Actually, every single one of the 1000+ TY's I've bought, whether "premium" or "value" have some lettered and numbered code on the inner plastic hub.
What does all this mean? Sadly, even with TY's, you won't know what you've gotten until you test them. Now, granted, I've never had one bad burn on a TY disk, but I don't think my experience is as evidential of the reliability of TY media as it used to be.
So, who knows...

What a way to start a thread "Fake Ty's at meritline". Uterly a stupid move without proof or a answer from Meritline. What do you work for superstore or another media outlet. Please get proof before you knock the shi% out of a outlet. If you searched first you could have downloaded a free program to check your media out.

Yeah, I try not to make bold statements like that unless I'm almost positive. Not that I'm worried about being sued for libel, but you don't want to say you found a finger in your soup and ruin a business's reputation without proof.
Now about the fake TYs. I personally do not trust Meritline or Shop4tech which has also been known to distribute shady TYs. I don't even buy TYs because they open themselves up to fakes without a logo or list of reputable dealers, so in the end, instead of getting the best discs, you could be using DVDs worse than Princo or Kypermedia. So screw Taiyo Yuden, in my book. My Verbatims and Ridatas work very well, and they're real (and spectacular). If you really suspect they are less than authentic, you could check the MID with DVDInfoPro, then test one disc after burning. You'll be able to tell if they're fakes right away since TYs have extremely low PI/POs, and if you see any PIF (failures), you know what you bought is garbage (not TYs). I guess you could also contact TY and ask them if Meritline is an authorized dealer and that you suspect that your discs are less than authentic. My feeling is they are real since a big distributer like Meritline wouldn't risk selling fakes and being sued out of business.

copy that, except I disagree with this statement:
"My feeling is they are real since a big distributer like Meritline wouldn't risk selling fakes and being sued out of business."
So far as I have been reading about it, ALL of those big mediastores have, and probably will, sell fakes...and they are still open, eh?
Then again, in this case, if they are TY's, since they are the 'value' media (what a name) the chances for a bad batch may have gone up considerably. I got some of these from supermediastore, and while they PLAY ok, the scan curve is nowhere NEAR as good as, say, TYG02 Fujis.
a word to the wise for fancymojo:
When people do stuff like that, it's kind of like trolling...when it gets the kind of response that you gave, BOTH of these kinds of things bum the forum out. At least try to refrain from swearing, and use your wit instead!

please let us know how they turn out for you...the TRUE test is once you've burned them and how well they play on your computer/standalones.
this topic of fake or real TYs has been beaten to death, everyone and their moms have an opinion and are so entitled to speak their minds, the bottom line is how it works for you PERSONALLY. if something works well, i wouldn't complain, if it doesn't..then there is room for speculation and arguement on the authenticity of the products ordered...
just my 2 cents, everyone has the right to their own opinions, i KNOW what works for me and nobody else. just let us know how they hold up for you fancymojo, if it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

my FAKE tys that i have...were horrible...not only do they NOT work, they are on par w/ my cmc mags i bought under the memorex label YEARS ago...but, that is a completely diff. subject, im just sick of all the arguing and resentment on here that people have about this subject. i have received 1/2 dozen PMs asking me my take on the authenticity of people's TYs ordered...while most of them genuinely sought my advice and assistance, a few just PM me just to argue and prove THEIR own point~ that is all i am saying...
you seem to be having pretty good luck w/ your purchases daimyo, so, i am not singling you out...other members just need to know the facts about media...MY own FAKE TYS suck donkey di*k, and i would not recommend them to anyone unless they like flushing money down the toilet, but, for me to recommend genuine TYs to anyone new to dvd backups, i stand by that 100% for quality and compatiblity.

i have never bought any TY's yet, but follow the posts all the more so i know what to look for if i ever do. However i doubt i will buy any as it looks like TY were destined to be asking to be faked, if they're preceived to be the holy grail of disks. So i keep watching the posts and appreciating the knowledge around here, i just can't afford to get stung with fakes again (i got hit bad by many many 100s of Bulkpag's - fake TYG02's - i'll refrain from saying more as i've commented on Bulkpaq's in other threads and i'm still stuck with many potentially uncopyable/unwatchable Bulkpaq's no matter what i say. ARGH!). And for know i stick to my trusty Verbatim's, which i'm now using at 8x, so gonna have to change my sig at some point.

:) creaky~ LOL
there are many fakes out there, but, in all fairness, if you buy from a reputable dealer, whether it be online or locally, then you will not have a problem~ i don't disagree with you in the statement that Verbs are very trustworthy, as i have had hundreds of flawless burns myself on Verbatims, just don't sell yourself short in not "trying genuine TYs" in the near future...TYs do a body good~ :)

If it wasn't for this forum I would still be having bad burns due to inferior media and sub par programs. Members have walked me through step by step of doing tasks to get a good burn.To date I have gotten good media (Ty's & Verbatum) from meritline & supermedia and shutter thinking that UPS will be delivering a bogus 100 pack. I want to know if any outfit is selling fakes as to avoid losing $$$ and the agriviation that goes with it. DVD info (free program) is invaluable on checking media out. Bad experiences should be posted so we weigh it when buying supplies and should be based on fact. There are threads here on who to stay away from - who has good shipping and bad shipping - the good and bad on each store - stay away from different brand media and even rating burners. Great forum - Ya, I'm a newbie and fancy get a life.

if u keep acting like this u wont be a newbie for long cuz u will be banned just like others who did the samething ur doing now. as you can see in my other post i said maybe the ones from supermedaistore were fake because of the pi errors. but i dont think you would even care as to whats been posted by me or others. like one other member said ur just "trolling". as u can see i said i was sorry for what i said. i guess thats to adult for u to understand. now its time for u to grow up and see that this is a "help forum" and not a "act like a child forum"

We need to be careful about how we title our threads. When I saw this thread I automatically assumed someone had recieved a batch of fake TY's from meritline but after reading realized there was no verification. This can give meritline and TY a bad rep, both of which IMO are undeserving. Maybe next time title the thread "are these TY's from meritline fake or genuine?" Personally I have had good luck with meritline and TY. Meritline is one of the only media stores that you can email and they will tell you the media code of a particular media. After looking at the scan results looks like these TY's are actually a little better than some others scanned.
Hey kivory, can I PM you, please. :)

mr 666, that was a JOKE. Coupled with SARCASM...which I occasionally forget doesn't come across in text. Maybe I should have used rabbit ears? In any case, for my part: sorry!
OK, try this: These two TYG01's walked into a bar...
Now, as far as 'reputable dealers' online, well that's all up to one's own experience. So far I have been burned by meritline, supermediastore, and shop4tech. And now, I have to see what newegg is going to do, but that's another thread, which I will now commece with.
