Hi all. I am new to this forum and new to DVD burning but Im close to losing my mind. I burned a DVD movie onto a verbatim DVD+R disk no problem but now that I am trying to burn onto Maxell DVD-R Im getting no where. The burner claims the movie is written but neither my computer nor DVD player recognize the disk. All the components (burner, program and player) claim to work with both DVD+R and DVD-R so what the hell is the problem? Please help

Well first of all, maybe its a compatibility issue(I have cases where the media although its -r cannot be recognized by some players although is 1st class media, and maybe some other brand media its) so why dont you try booking the DVD movie to DVD-ROM, have you tried burning the movie on another disc of the same spindle (maybe there was a problem with the disc). Try booking to DVD-ROM and tell me how you do.
To book type DVD-ROM through nero: before the recording option is given choose the "options" tab that lies after the burner name, and in book type settings choose "DVD-ROM"
I hope it helps

Hello kr2480 and welcome to AD.
Quote: All the components (burner, program and player) claim to work with both DVD+R and DVD-R
First off,we need to know your exact burner model number and brand name. Most burners will play either format, but some-older models-only burn plus or dash format only.
Verbatim's are good to very good, depending on which manufacturer that produces them. Maxell is also a very good brand, and also have many different manufacturers. These and most other brands of media like sony, tdk, fuji, and lowly memorex all have many different manufacturers.
We need more info like all your programs you are using to backup your dvd's. Also your burners firmware version and tell us what exactly you are trying to backup like avi/ISO/jpeg/or regular original dvd's.
Here is a link to dvdinfopro. It has a free version and it will tell you the exact mfg ID code. I believe it will also tell you your firmware version. Google your burner's model # to find the latest update.

Do you have only that single burner drive or do you also have a separate dvd-rom drive?

I have an external dvd burner namely a Plextor PX-716UF. I am using DVD Wizard Pro trial version to burn the DVD. The DVD I am burning is a regular dvd video (movie). I tried going to DVD Info Pro to get information but it claims there is no media in the drive and wont tell me anything.

Booktyping to DVD-ROM can be done only with DVD+R discs - what this means is a DVD player will recognize the disc as a DVD-ROM disc as opposed to a DVD+R disc therby increasing compatibility (only helps if compatibility with DVD+R was a problem). Booktyping is not an issue with DVD-R so don't worry about this for your Maxell DVD-Rs.
Try another disc...maybe the first disc was defective. Try using dvdinfopro on a blank DVD-R disc and post the findings. Good luck.

I tried using dvd info pro on a blank disc and it is saying there is no media in the drive. Could it be that the computer cant read it? I tried burning it again with a different disc to no avail. Im getting the same response

Well what interface does the Burner use (USB, Fireware) Have you tried updating the firmware for your burner? U can find it here
http://www.plextor.com/english/support/downloads/firm_716.htm
try updating the firmware these could probbably help you solve the problem while doing some very good upgrades to the drive (Like adding adding support For DVD-R DL media)
Tell me how you do
