OK, this has been bugging the crap out of me for a very long time. I have an ATI All In Wonder 9600 and for some reason when I try to capture video from VHS tapes the video quality is really bad. It skips, jumps, and has distortion. I have tried using the original drivers from ATI all the way up to the current release of the Catalyst drivers and the ATI Multi Media Center. I can record video off of my Satellite TV just fine, but when I insert a tape into the VCR the video sucks. I have tried 3 VCRs from 3 Different brands. Toshiba, Sony, and Panasonic. All of which are very good brands. The computer I am using has plenty of power to handle this task and I have tried consulting ATI and they are no help. Here are my computer specifications if they may shed some insight.

Custom Built:
ASUS P4G8X Series Motherboard
Pentium 4 3.066GHz with HT Technology
512MB of Corsair PC2700 DDR RAM
40GB 7200RPM IDE Western Digital Hard Drive for OS and Programs
80GB 7200RPM IDE Western Digital Hard Drive for Data
ATI All In Wonder Radeon 9600 Video
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound
Pioneer DVD-ROM Drive
Sony DRU-500A DVD±RW
Windows XP Professional SP2

Well I think that is all the important factors. I have tried running the software with hyperthreading on and off and the same results are produced. I just reformatted my harddrive and tried again with only windows and drivers installed and the same results. If anyone has experienced this or has any insight please let me know. Thank You.

Are you dubbing commercial movies? If so it could be Macrovision interference. Try a tape recorded from TV and see if it improves things.

NO this is not a commercial movie, but I did try one to see if that would help. These are normal tapes that one would use to record personal stuff on like a tv show or home movies. There is no macrovision on this tape It is just a movie that a friend of mine recorded and would like to have on DVD.

now I hooked up my sony camcorder via the analog inputs and it records fine. Maybe the VCRs I am using have some sort of duplicating safty feature I am not aware of. I don't see why it won't allow me to duplicate a self recorded video. That makes me mad.

Glad you got it to work. Sounds like it was MacroVision.
Some videocards have MacroVision technology embedded just like some VCRs do, too.

Now I just have to find a way to get this tape into a digital video format. Maybe a USB video capture device or maybe I can take it to work. The school I work for has Casablanca Avio Video editing machines that have the ability to record to DVD. Thanks for the replies

most ati cards have mac protection built in i chucked a cheap £20 tv card in and all works fine now sorry if this has allready been said

Thats what I am assuming the problem was. I borrowed a USB 2 capture device and it captured the video just fine. Thanks for all the replies.
