Hello All,

I have bought an external DVD writer, an NEC 3520A connected to my laptop Dell Inspiron 5150 through Firewire and am using Verbatim Datalife certfied 16x dvd+r discs.

I have read here in the forums that people copy an entire dvd in 6 mintues 10 seconds. When I copy a dvd image from my hard disk it takes about 8 mintues 45 seconds. Is it correct? Can I do something to quicken it or have I been misinformed when buying.

Sounds fast enough for me for an external burner. The firewire is probably slowing you down a couple of minutes to 12X as compared to an internal burner which is a little over 6 minutes for 16X.

By the way, I have an internal NEC 3520. Is yours one that is put in an external enclosure? If so, I may want to do the same for my laptop.....

your burn speeds are fine~ all my dvd burners are internal, and i also have the nec3520a internally, i burn fairly quick with it and i think the fact that yours is external will give you the speed discrepency by a few minutes, nothing to worry about. even on my verbatim 16x, i have never burned anything that fast, i keep ALL my burns now at 8x regardless of media~ :)

nothing to worry about magnet, if it was a matter of say, 10+ min. difference, then i would be skeptical, but, we talking about 2 min here~ no biggie~ :)

Thanks for the responses guys. It's good to know this is nothing to worry about. Yes the drive is in an enclosure externally and I don't know if I'm answering your question LABOY correctly since there's no other choice for a drive to be external unless it is in an enclosure of some sort. I have the option of using USB2 or Firewire connection.

I checked with Nero's CD-DVD speed and ran a test with 'Create Data Disc' option. The speed started from 6.67x and rose to a peak of 10.3 where it started to fluctuate heavily between highs of about 8-10x and lows of 4-6x. If you have used this tool you know what i'm trying to say. There are big kinks in the graph and the average speed is reported to be 8.57x. The maximum never exceeded 10.3x. The graph of the write speed and that of the RPM is anything but smooth.
Please let me know if you have had similar results if you have used Nero's CD-DVD speed or similar testing utility.

you are just fine, actually, my speeds are never higher than 10x regardless of what kind of media i use on this nec3520a...it's a very solid performer with flawless backups, but definitely NOT my fastest in terms of burning. my pioneer burns at 16x in Nero if i allow it on my TY media and easily 12x on my Verbatims. but, it's really a matter of a few minutes, i never let it bother me.

sounds pretty good to me my friend, it's a very good drive and for the price of it nowadayz, it's money well spent. :)

i get spikes like those too when i use Nero testing, it's probably very similar to yours, my playback is still flawless nevertheless. :)

@ magnetpua

To clarify, I was wondering if you bought the OEM version of the NEC 3520 and separately bought an external enclosure and put it together.
Or if you purchased your external burner as a single unit already contained. If the latter, would like to know where you purchased. Am seriously interested in one for my laptop....

To LABOY:
I bought it as a single unit already contained. I bought it from http://atlastsolutions.com/shop/ who are based in UK.

Thanks. That explains it, I live in US and couldn't find the external NEC burner in the mail order stores I generally buy from. I'll probably make my own...Have a good one!
