Sanyo DVR-500 Subtitle Problem

Can anyone help a newbie!

My Sanyo DVR-500 always plays subtitles and I cannot turn off. Set-up is set to "off" and I have tried pressing the remote subtitle button during play which just seems to add an additional subtitle.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove this or do I have a lemon!
