Nero Vision Express 3.1.0.0 Problems

I'm trying to create a slide show on DVD for my daughter's soccer team (pix from the last year). I assemble them (with music) - create a menu with 9 buttons (1.7 GB or so). Then when I try to write it to the hard drive for later burning (or directly to DVD) it cancels with an error but does not list the error. I have no other problems with burning - use a NEC-3520A (wonderful drive) under Windows XP Pro (but only 256MB RAM). Has anybody successfully done a slide show to DVD using Nero? Or any other product. Nero works very well otherwise - just this slide show thing.
