Hi:

I have a Plextor PX-708A burner and have almost never had a burning issue until now. I only use Verbatim or Ritek media. I have been buying Verbatim DVD-R'S 8x (94854) and Ritek DVD -R'S 8x (DRD-47-8X-RDIW50N2) for a long time with virtually no coasters until now.

The problem is only with the Verbatim. These are model 94854 with full hub printing. Now according to the Newegg website these are supposed to be 8x media. I put them into dvdinfopro and the code is MCC 02RG20 which are supposed to be superior media. However the descriptor only goes up to 4.0 speed. There isn't an 8.0 descriptor. VERY STRANGE!

I usually only write at 4x anyway. Out of the first 30 discs in this batch I have a few good burns and about 25 coasters. Most of the problems are not starting (have to hit next chapter, I re-author and only backup the main movie), stutturing, freezing etc. However the cheaper Riteks copy great using the same ISO file.

I am using latest Shrink and Decrypter. I have cleaned my plextor and 2 sony players. I have the latest firmware v.1.10. I have even read in the file with decrypter and then used shrink. I am using Windows XP with a 250 gig HD, just for dvd backups, which I re-formatted after all the bad burns. My controller is set to DMA.

The discs are from Taiwan. Some have said to only get the ones from Singapore but I have used either 1 (maybe 2) cakeboxes of these media in the past with no problems and Verbatim says there isn't any difference in quality between the two.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with Verbatim? Newegg as usual was kind enough to give me a $20 credit since I still have 20 media left. I am thinking of going back to firmware v.1.09 just to try that. I have an order in for 50 Ritek -r's that are hub printable. Should get them by WED. Regards...

This won't help solve your problem the verbatum dvd-r's you have now but, I get my verbatum 8x dvd+r hub printables (code MCC 003) from meritline and am yet to have any problems with them. Also since they are +r I can booktype them dvd-rom, increasing compatability. Here's the link if interested. http://www.meritline.com/verbatim-8x-dvd-r-plus-inkjet-hub-printa...

hmmm, I'v enever had problems with those discs and have used quite a bit. But from my experience any discs can have bad batches so maybe it's just a fluke for you...a bad one unfortunately.

hi:

Thanks for the replies. mort81, I used to buy from Meritline but newegg's prices and shipping are lower and faster. Newegg has the same exact Verbatim's delivered for $37.99 while Meritline gets $42 and change.

I guess I'll get them since both vendors have the exact same model# (both made in Singapore also). Thanks for the tip and link...Regards

Yeah if they're both the same no reason to spend more money. I've bought quite a bit of media from newegg and do like their service and normally they only sell top notch stuff. Like Randolphh said, could be a bad batch, although I've never had any problems with media made by MCC. Good luck.

@Pennron - that is strange, (i also remember your thread where you had a Verbatim representative advise that Singapore media were older stock and that Taiwanese media were the same quality). I've just checked my uponened mountain of 8x MCC's and they have a code 'Reorder 43475' on the tubs (25tubs). hmmm can find info on the net about 94854 but not on http://www.verbatim-europe.com/index/product_view.php?article_id=...

Hey Creaky:

I am totally impressed that you remember my thread concerning the Verbatim Rep. Awesome. In any event I backed up a movie last night using shrink. I then used decrypter to write the ISO to one of the problem Verbatims. All the while I surfed the net (which I never do) while the file was being written. Came out perfect. Go figure!

So I guess this batch is hit or miss. I think from now on I will stay with +r Verbatims. I have no idea why this batch of Verbatims which are labeled 8x only has a 4x descriptor according to dvdinfopro.

I am also waiting on the 8x Ritek +r's full hub printable (getting them thurs) from Newegg. Regards...

Hi Ron,

Are you sure those riteks you're getting are +r and hub printable? Reason I ask is I was looking for some ritek dvd+r hub printables but all I can find is either (non hub) printables or dvd-r hub printables.

Hi Mort81:

You guys are on the ball. I screwed up. They are dvd-r's, not +r's. They are on the Newegg website. Here is a review from one happy camper who bgt. them for $25.50 delivered:

I have a Lite-On SOHW-1673S DVD burner and I only use Ritek media in the drive. I was skeptical of some reviews which said that Ritek makes the best media out there but after discussing the matter with my geeky friends I decided to purchase a spindle and give them a test drive. I have found the words of others to be 100% accurate. These discs are amazing! I have had no errors or problems with the discs. I made one ?coaster? but it was not the media, it was power that went out. The page does not list it but when I did a test on the media I found out that indeed these are the famous Ridata G05 Discs which ARE ?Hub Printable?. I print them on my Epson R200 printer and have made some amazing prints. Regardless of how many DVD?s you plan on creating if you are looking for ones to print onto look no further and put one or two of these bad boys in your cart, you will thank me (and NewEgg) for it once you start burning. The only drawback is that there is no spindle and they are shrink-wrapped, if that?s the most you have to worry about all day then you are doing pretty well. I just took an old spindle and stacked em up on that.

Summary:
These are Extremely high quality discs which are hub printable. A great product for the newbie or seasoned veteran. A no-brainer purchase and solid 5 star performer to boot. A competitive price from what I have found combined with the high quality of service that I demand from a computer company.

(I do not base my rating of this product in anyway based upon the service of NewEgg or the speed for which I received the product as many people do.)

@Pennron, re the Verbatim Rep, sometimes it's my memory, sometimes it's copy/paste (i'm not saying which!). i do use my PC during burns, for surfing only, and only if it's sites guaranteed not to trigger 6000 popups or cause hard disc to churn (ie afterdawn lol!)
