It's down to top quality versus inferior & inconsistent quality (crap media can't even be consistent in being crap, it fools ppl be being just about passable, maybe even for 100s of burns); with that in mind - here's a start - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298.
Not Memorex but fake TY, 100s of them.
It'll illustrate the point whilst i do a search at top of page...

At the end of the day I can't afford to waste money (or time for that matter) on stuff that's gonna need throwing away not long after it's been written to, or causes me to have to redo the failed discs on proper discs, especially when there's no cost difference in buying quality over landfill material.

see the comments from saugmon, sums it up far better than i could.

As for TY i don't yet personally use any, but there are many, many posts from ppl with much experience with them, i myself just follow the TY posts just in case i get bored with my quality Verbatims.. So for TY try doing a search...

The big problem with Memorex is that they buy whatever's cheapest at the time. As a result, even if you get a decent batch of discs you'll never know what the next ones you buy will be like. OTOH the problem with TY is that they have such a good name that it's easy to end up with fakes that are crap instead of the real thing. If you get Fujis that are made in Japan they should be TY but you'll probably pay more than you would for non-branded TY discs.

@BigPantz - i've been using www.svp.co.uk for a while now, and before that, ebuyer. (ebuyer was ok, still use them sometimes, but i find svp better). I've seen pretty much only good things about svp, and even saw a thread recently where someone had apparently had a go at svp for selling fake TY (i think it was Bulkpaq or something); there was a reply in the thread from someone high up in svp assuring that they had never and would never sell fake disks.

Plus their postage is top, you can buy up to 10kg of stuff for the same £4.49 postage cost, which i'm sure makes them extra profit as you feel you should take advantage of the 10kg.

Best of all i had to return some unwieldy dvd storage cases to svp recently, and i was dreading trudging them to the post office in case i was told to bugger off. svp collected them, and refunded me in about 4days (it would have been a couple days, it was just the courier didn't bother ringing when he tried to pickup). First time i'd ever come across a company that was as quick and efficient.
As i say i only use Verb's at the moment, but they sell genuine TY's. The cost of the TY's is 'fairly' reasonable, but more expensive for me since i can get the Verb's for an excellent price.
