I am a newbie on burning dvds or saving them for backup. Is there a way to compress the size of the movie to a single dvd disc? Also, when your ripping a dvd is the size usually smaller than the standard size. I know when I download movies online from Limewire you'll see some that are 700MB while some are just 200MB.
To compress DVD-9 to DVD-5 you can use DVD Shrink. Ripping a 6 Gb dvd will give you 6 Gb's of files.Ripping means removing encryptions and copying to HDD. The ones online are usualy ripped/compressed/converted so they U/L-D/L faster. Check out the guides section on SVCD-VCD for more info.
OU812Ono creates a good point, the best method to use is to compress it with DVD Shrinkg or DVDXCopy Platinum or other such. This will compress the DVD to fit to a single DVD-5 Disk, great. If you have a dual layer burner, take advantage of it, and cut down the time by just ripping it to the HDD, then burning to dual layer disk.
Movies shared over the net are commonly either AVI (DivX), WMV or MPEG, WMV is the smallest (worst quality), AVI/DivX you should know about :) and Mpeg is the largest file type ranging with quality from a WMV standard to DVD standard, take head...
Phantom69: How do you know when your downloading a good quality movie online? I'm sure after watching the movie any viewer should be able to tell. I'm guessing AVI(Divx) movies has standard quality.
Just curious, is DVD Shrink free? I was planning on getting the DVD X Copy Platinum but seems like there's problems with the software since the government stopped them from distributing their product. Also, are there certain dvd's where you won't be able to rip? I know some dvd's have some kind of encryption, not sure but I'm just curious. One last thing, how long does it rip a standard dvd? Say some where around 2-3hrs long.
I don't have burner yet, I guess I'll shop around eBay for a decent one. Any suggestions?
Dvd Shrink is free, it's on here in the downloads section. It's true that Shrink will not handle some of the newer movies, since the creator has joined forces with Nero and no longer updates Shrink.
That's where DVD Decrypter comes in "free and also in the d/l section". If you find a movie that your not able to rip, more than likely there is a work-around for it. Although it might take me a little longer to find the solution,I have yet to come across one I could not copy.
If you want you can use AnyDVD, which has a trial version, after that I think it's around 20-some dollars for registered version. I'm too cheap to pay for it, and DvdDecryptor works fine for me.
As far as ripping goes it depends on the specs of your PC. It takes me around 15-20 minutes to rip to my HDD. Older/slower systems can expect longer times.
I use an Nec-3500AG, I have no complaints about it. But then again this is only my prefrence. You can check out www.cdfreaks.com for more info on burners, and what they can be made to do. Some of those guys are getting impressive results with what they're doing.
I would recommend a Dual Layer burner, for the simple fact that they've come down condiserably in price, and in the future when the d/l media is offered cheaper it would be good not to have to buy a new burner. "A dual layer burner will burn Single layer dvd's as well."
i guess the best way to realise the quality of the file, is to compare file sizes with that of the other existing/available files for download. also keep in mind the file type as i outlined.
the first dvd i eva had a prob. with was 'The Forgotten' (some new protection **** from sony) this posed a problemo. so using some of the software OU812Ono suggested (a while ago), i used AnyDVD, and the latest version of DVD decryptor then CloneDVD, but with AnyDVD installed you won't need any other dvd authoring/ripping softs. an alternative (so ive hear) to AnyDVD is DVD43 which is good cause its freeware.
I gots a SAMSUNG dual layer dvd burner, and i'm right, just that in Australia, DVD-9 hasn't really hit the scene other than that which are used for Movies at Blockbuster etc.
i hope this helps you, if not send me a private message and i will give you a much more detailed account on programs and methods for useing in your quest to rip...
