Recently I have bought a PS2 slim from Japan which outputs PAL signal. I didn't try playing any PAL games here because Japan's standard is not PAL ( which is NTSC ). That is why I am not sure whether I can play the pirated games( I am not concerned about the imported games or backups ) with this PS2 without installing any mod-chip. If that is not possible than what is the solution to this? I don't want to break the guarantee seal of my machine. any suggestion ?

I am really new to this ps2 machine. One question though, why PS2 does not allow to play any pirated games ?? Normal movie dvd is running on my machine, then why not the games ?? and also what is that swap disk, is it available at Japan also ??

it doesnt play copied games because sony didnt want us too, they would loose out on quite a bit of money

the main reason a game wont work is in the way the disc is made

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.

So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

With the boot-discs (swap magic) you need a 'tool' to open
the tray without pressing eject for the backups to work.

The ps2 is quite a dumb machine really, all you have to do is trick it into thinking the cd tray hasnt been opened after its read the BCA, which swap magic provides

if you get swap magic you have to buy them, you cannot download them because then there just backups too, and you now know that the ps2 doesnt like backups

hope this helps
