Can't beat genuine Taiyo Yuden. My second choice would be Verbatim
Datalife plus made by MCC. I personally don't use anything but TY
now. In my opinion it really has no equal. Zeide

there wasn't a lot else i could put there, me being a one-brand band!.
it makes it tricky answering threads like this as i only stick to one brand. But when i comment about other makes i make sure to say i haven't used them myself. I have my moments tho!

you have an intelligent response, even though you are a VERB guy~ i have to agree with you in recommending Verbatims to other members here on AD. i myself have used many many different brands with varying results, but in the end, i have found only TY and Verbs to be of satisfactory quality. thousands of flawless burns on EITHER TY or VERB, nothing else...ok, i take that back, back in the days, i used Ritek G05's that EVERYONE either complains about or praises, but i had very good results with those too~
i don't use the Riteks anymore, but, some people have great results with them...my suggestions to people asking is limited to what i use NOW and what works for ME. as long as you don't get fakes, TY and VERBS should be a very good bet in my opinion~

I finished my second backup of Star Wars set on Ritek DL and came out excellent. The Ritek tested out as good, am thinking of buying Verb next and try, even though my wallet is going to really deflate over the purchase :~)

arniebear,
Do you have have RB/CCE? Curious to know how a backup of a complete dvd9 to a dvd5 done with RB/CCE compares to dvd9 to a dvd9. I'm sure dvd9 to dvd9 is better but since my final vidio folder is around 7000 mb after editing I wonder if it would be that benefitial to try some dvd9's. Useing RB/CCE I can't see any loss in vidio quality on my 52" big screen besides I'm sure injet printable dvd9's cost a mint (if they're even available).

No I don't use RB/CCE I tried but did not have the patience, will probably try again. The size the Star Wars movie was about 8g, the quality on 52 inch was really good, the contrast was perfect and the surround was great. For large movies this is definitely the way to go, if only it was not so expensive. I want to backup my LOTR extended disks this way so I am going to pop for the Verbs. I got my Plextor 716 a few weeks ago so this is why I tried out the dual layer, did not want to do it on my HP. I have a Toshiba that is sensitive to disks and errors it is over four years old and these disks play fine. I burned one with CopytoDVD and the other with DVDDecrypter and both progs performed well.

arniebear,
You really should give RB/CCE another try. Once it's set up its as easy to use as most 1 click proggy's. You do have to rip the dvd to your hdd and make a new empty folder as the target but one real nice feature is you can use batch processing and encode several vidio folders while you sleep or are at work. Then all you have to do is burn the encoded folders to a disc. I prefer burning seperately anyway so I can name the disc and select burn speed.

I plan on giving it another try, where I had the problem was with RB not recognizing CCE, it just kept telling me it was not there. I thought when I get some time and see just what is wrong in my set up. I figure if I go read the RB/CCE thread I might just solve the problem. I want to try and see how the quality is since everyone says it is so good. I keep trying progs to see which gives out the best quality, so I will definitely give it a go again. Thanx for the nudge :~)

people often underestimate the whole burn process when they don't take into consideration how important using quality media is, if they get an unsuccessful burn, they #1 blame it on software, #2 blame it on hardware, #3 blame it on someone else for user error~ LOL
but, the fact of the matter is...many frequent problems with bad burns and errors are due to media~
as much as i've read "it's not the media, i've used these before with no problems" i think they will have it coming back to haunt them a few months down the road~
using good media is one of the easiest ways to improve your chances of getting a quality backup, burning slower than manufacturer's rated speed never hurts either to cut down on errors.
use some TYs or Verbs people, your luck will improve...just stay away from those darn CMC MAGs, do yourself a favor, don't say i didn't tell ya so.... :)

@ creaky~
HELP me plz~ i can't play my backups, i use only the finest in CMC MAG dvd media, what is wrong??? HAHAHAHHAHAHA
you don't even KNOW how many people i've suggested quality media to, and they just take my suggestion and throw it out the window, naturally, their problems remain. the do everything BUT change media, i was helping some guy and he went out and BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER since he couldn't successfully backup his movies~ brand new comp, SAME PROBLEM~ HAHAHAHA...goes to show you to what extreme some people will go before they actually consider what i say to them~ it's hopeless sometimes, people always think so highly of themselves, it's an innate human trait, if something goes wrong, blame someone else, it's obviously not "user error" because they are Gods in their own light~ :P
anyways, i can see why many other senior members and addicts have chosen to leave, newbs will blame everyone and their moms before admitting THEY are doing something wrong. i always learn something new on here, and i contribute to others and assist those that genuinely need help.
as you would say creaky, "grumble grumble"...that expresses exactly how i am feeling right now~ :)

Hey kivory,
Congrats, thou art senior status.
Ya know, I can help most ppl with general backup problems, backup software problems, or drive problems but since I don't download any movies off the net or convert the files to dvd compliant formats and can't offer any solutions to file coversion, I sometimes wonder if I am derserving of the senior status myself. Ask me anything about making a backup of a dvd and more than likely you will get an accurate and educated answer but ask me about file conversion or conversion software and I have to look around the room for somebody else or hope somebody is following the thread that knows. Thats the honest truth.
