I have a plextor px-708a...I have had it about a year I guess and it was working great up until a few days ago...I am making backups of movies and I was using DVD shrink and then burning it with Easy cd creator 6.0...then that program started to burn the dvd's slow and eventually would not burn at all...it would get through about half the disc and get errors...so I removed that program because it seems like many people have problems with it...I got the new Nero...I can burn dvd's but it take about an hour and it used to be about 15 minutes...Any suggestions as to what it could be???

TIA

What are your computer specs? I believe may be your dvd-rom and dvd burner has been kicked into PIO MODE instead of DMA MODE. If possible can you please post your successful "nero log" - this will help others to help you better. What speeds and blank media are you using to do your back up?

Follow tThese steps if you have Windows XP on your computer; perhaps it might help you back to normal again.

1) Right click the "My Computer" icon on the "desktop" and click "Properties."
2) Select the "Hardware" and click on "Device Manager" button.
3) Left click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI" controllers - if you see it.
3) Locate the "Primary and Secondary" IDE Channels, and double click on the one your hard-drive is connected to (usually the Primary IDE Channel).
4) Open the "Advanced Settings" page on the IDE Channel Properties window that appears. Now you should be able to see DMA MODE or PIO
5) Click the "Transfer Mode" dropdown box and select "DMA if available".
6) Click on the "OK" button to confirm the changes.
7) That's it, you've just enabled DMA. Depending on the number of devices you have on your system, it could be useful to do this on the Secondary IDE Controller as well, and to both devices on each of them.

However, if you your drive is locked in PIO mode, and you "can not" enable it back to DMA MODE, then you'll need to uninstall the controller or its driver in "Device Manager" by "right click" on it and select "uninstall" and then "reboot" your computer. When you re-start your comptuer, it (Windows) will reset to DMA mode. Most DVD drives are ULTRA DMA2 or similar.
