After a number of recent DVDs that I have built, I noticed that my color saturation and my black levels were not up to par. I did a test and created an AVI of SMPTE color bar test pattern. I tried encoding it in Mainconcept MPEG encoder version 1.4.2, and directly bringing the AVI into Encore 1.5 and transcoding it, then burned a DVD of both. After I was done with the DVD, I ran it back through waveform and vector scopes to see what had happened to the test signal.
The result was the black levels were significantly up, no longer a pure black, white was slightly down, and the color saturation was at about 75%

Does anyone know how to set encoding settings to preserve more of this information? I understand the process of MPEG encoding and know that it is a very lossy proceedure, but what can I do to minimize my losses. I really want the black to be more black, it always is greyish and takes away that rich contrast that I want. The color could really use a punch too.
