Swap magic disks are all you need.
And a 'tool' to open the ps2 without pressing eject on the console.
The 'tool' will vary depinding your model ps2.

if you get the newer swapmgic 3.3 or 3.6 you WONT need to patch
any games.

95% of games will copy using dvd decrypter alone.

I have a custom flip-top lid instlled from www.clearxbox.com

http://www.swapmagic3.com

Patches are for the OLDER versions of swapmagic.

You not going to be able to play backups without swapmagic disks
or a modchip.

PATCHES ALONE WONT WORK PATCHES ARE FOR THE GAMES using SWAP MAGIC DISKS.

There are no 'patches' you can add to a game to make them work,
your going to have to mod your ps2.

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.
So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

I thinks my top 2 choices would be the DMS4 Pro which i have and love it
and the Matrix Infinity
Look for chips that will have flash upgrades available, which both of those do
You will have to spend and extra $10 or $20 dollars on them but they are worth it and they will do anything you need.
with chips you get what you pay for.
