Problem:

I tried burning my first DL today. The disc (Phantom of the Opera 2004) burned, well appeared to burn without any issues. However, when I put it in my Sony DVD player (for the theater system), I get a disc error saying that the disc is dirty. Now an error in the player was not totally unexpected, what was unexpected however was, when I put it in back in my DVD burner to check out how well things worked, It cause my computer to do a system dump (BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH). It happens every time that I put in the disc that I burned.

System:
WinXp Pro w/ SP2
Sony DVD DRU-700A
AnyDVD 5.1.1.1
CloneDVD2 2.8.2.1

Media:
Memorex dual layer

I have used both fuji and memorex single layer media in the past. All of the movies burnt previously to one disc turn out fine.

Procedure to burn;

Using CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD is pretty straight forward. Typically, I plop in my disc select Clone DVD and I am off. Now this time, yes i selected the proper media opton from Clone DVD (DVD +R DL). I set the burning speed to 1x to be safe. I copied the title to my HDD first. Yes the movie plays fine from my HDD.

Any thoughts? Work arounds? Fixes?

Thanks

I have burnt three dual layer disks for the first time this week, backing up my Star Wars boxed set. I used Ritek because I distrust Memorex from past experience. I used DVDDecrypter on the first one and it played on two expensive players flawlessly and on two cheap players had two stutters and a freeze, this was at 2.4X. The second I used AnyDVD and CopytoDVD at 2.4x and it played flawlessly on the expensives again and had a stutter on the cheaps. The third I used Nero at 2.4x and it played badly on one cheap and errored out on the other 3 players. I reburned at 4x using CopytoDVD and the disk burned flawlessly on all four players. I am using a Plextor 716. What I have found out from this experiment is that good media is important. Also, burn speed seemed to make a difference and program used. Try burning at 2.4x with Decrypter and better media, maybe Verbatim, and see if you still have the same problems.

Ok ... For some reason, the DVD has decided to play on my PC player (the burner that i burned it on) ... but not real well. It no longer crashes my PC but, It plays choppy and gives lots of frame freeze. This is the only video that I have burned that does not play well on the PC that I burned it on. Any thoughts.

Also, I have noticed that it takes a long time for the computer to read this disc. It spins and spins before finally starting up. My first thought is firmware, but I already have the latest frimware upgrade from sony.

I am thinking of doing some experimentation ... suggestions would be welcome. I am thinking of trying to burn by making an Nero image next. Will Nero handle the layer split properly? Or is there something I need to set? For now, I am going to do all of my burns at 1X to be safe.

I have burned a little more D/L DVD's than arniebear ( I've burned 5 as they are a little expensive LOL). I used Verbatim and only DVDDecrypter to rip and burn the .iso image and they play in all of my players and computers. Ritek d/l media had problems and you could not give me Memorex as if they can not get the DVD-5 media correct how can they be expected to get the D/L media right, I think if you try Verbatim it might cure your problem and also try DVDDecrypter.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to give DVDDecrypter a try. I understand about the Memorex discs, but I was dumb enough to shell out $99.90 for a spindle of 25 from Compusa. I might as well get some practice with them. Thanks for the input. I will let you know how the burning goes.

I am going to download DVDDecrypter now. I may have soem questions regarding it use as I have only use CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD before.

Thanks

Burning with decrypter to dual layer is very easy. In your mode tab it is just iso read to your destination folder and when ripping is done, put in your disk then iso write from your source folder.

Hi _EarnIt_ ,

I've done approx 24 DL discs, some with CloneDVD2, using Ritek and Verbatim without a hitch. Again, Memorex is not my first choice. Perhaps you would run it through DVD Identifier and let us know who makes it for them.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Something you said troubles me,
Quote:

I don't believe you can burn an ISO image over a DL disc. An ISO Image cannot be split as VOB files can - you'll most likely waste another disc.

As for trying to "work through" your Memorex, we'll know better when we know who makes them and what kind of dye they're using BUT I suggest burning the first layer at 2X OR 2.4X at the highest. Burning too slow may cause issues by itself.

As to your Memorex, perhaps you'll be the teachers for us all.

NOTE: We cannot rule out the possibility that some of your playing problems on your player could be caused by the player itself especially if it's over 1 1/2 years old.

Cheers,

Pete

Burning 2 more DL's as I type this, all goes well using DVD Shrink (as expected) I've done7 or 8 this way that have turned out perfect

Never use "Memorex" period -- Memorex is just a piece of shit. If you want to go with DL media, then I would highly recommended "Verbatim DVD+R DL" instead. Now remember "NOT" to use Memorex on your future burning.

_EarnIt,
The Power Calibration error means the burner does not like the blank media you are using. You might go the burner's website to see if there is newer firmware update. If not the website should tell you what blank media is certified to work w/ that burner.

The only D/L disk certiified to work w/ that burner is Verbatim:
Go to the Sony site to see for yourself:

I told you to stay away from "$hitmorex" period. I've tried them before and it sucks big time. If you want a successful DL back up, then go with the "Verbatim DVD+R DL" - and yes.... I have an SONY DRU 710A BYX4(current firmware) have backed up 6 DL successfully using Verbatim and it plays flawlessly.

Lastly, Sony doesn't like Memorex because it's too cheap and low quality media. I guarantee you that 99.99% of the members in here will tell you to "stay away" from Memorex just like I told you to do so.

Gents ... thanks so far for all the help. I truly appreciate it. Here is where I stand to date.

1. Not trusting memorex (or shitmorex as alkohol call it). I went out and bought a 10 pack of verbatim today. Decent price $5 a piece. Worth the experimentation.

2. I think my Sony drive is failing. Everytime I load a movie now (burnt or non burnt) I get the blue screen of death. So, I am going to restore a Ghost image (love Norton Ghost 9.0) from a few days ago and do a diagnostic or two and then most likely off to the store for a new burner. (Man, is my wife gonna be pissed.)

Well, I will let everyone know how things are working. Once I get a burner working, I will try a verbatim and report back my success (hopefully).

Thanks Gents, I truly appreciate the help.

Gee you'd be surprised what a DVD burner that is not failing will do for your burning quality. My Sony seems to have died so I went out today and bought a new burner a ... (don't groan) Memorex DLRWL16D2. Why, because after rebate it was $70.00, and I like cheap especially if it will backup movies.

After installing the new drive, I opened up DVD Decrypter and popped in Friday Night Lights, pulled an ISO no problem. Then, I popped in one of those darn MEMOREX discs (not the new Verbatim saving those for after I do a little more practice). Next I made sure the bitsetting was set to DVD-ROM, then I burned away. Next I went out had a cigar, cut the grass ate diner came back and sure enough, a successful burn.

At this point, I take the DVD upstairs pop it in my SONY DVP-NS425P and surprise surprise surprise, it played. Now I won't lie, I did have a bit of frame freeze at what I presume is the layer break. But other than the one spot, it played through w/o a hitch. I have not watched it through on my PC yet, but I presume that it will play w/o issues.

So I am off to get some more experience burning Dual Layers. Sense I have the spindle of 25 open, I might as well have some fun w/ them and see what happens. When I am ready for some serious backups, I will open that Verbatim 10 pak and have at it.

So at this point, I have one more question (for now anyways), how do I determine where the layer break is on my Burnt disc. I would like to verify that the spot that is hanging up. Also (yup one more question already) do you suppose that the verbatim will "cure" any issues with the layer break?

Thanks

Oh one last thing ... after some digging, I am fairly sure that the Memorex DVD burner is a Lite-on in disguise.

Thanks again.

Somewhere at about 58% of the movie will be a layer break as one layer is larger than the other. If this is about where you found this sudden freeze then that is the layer break. Alot of programs have had problems w/ the layer break. Nero is getting better and w/in 3-4 months they might have it down pat. The best program I have found to do DVD-9's is DVDDecrypter. I have done some D/L blanks and have not noticed the layer break although I was using Verbatim. It might be the Memorex but I can not tell you for sure as I have never used one.
The program controls the layer break and not the blank media you are using
One thing you might have forgotten to do is to see if the firmware for the burner is up to date. Check and see.

Good point on the firmware. I grabbed it earlier but forgot to install it. LOL. I will put it on right after the next disc gets backed up. I am running Forgotten right now has another test. I had it on my HDD but never got around to puting it on DVD. For some reason CloneDVD2 had some real issues with Forgotten. I kep getting an invalid sector or somethingn like that.

Once the current burn is done, I will update the firmware also, I am seriously thinking about opening that Verbatim pak and writting Friday Night Lights to it for a side by side comparison of the reproduction. Man it is hard not to open those things and have at it once you have them in the house. I fear I won't see my wife and kids again until I am out of blank discs.

UPDATE: Both of the discs that I have burned give frame freeze at the layer breaks (while playing on my Sony DVD player). They eventually work through the issue or I can skip ahead a min or two and everything is fine again. Both discs play fine on my PC. No issues with the transition. I suspect that it is one of the following:

1. As indicated above possibly the Firmware.
2. Possibly the media. I will test verbatim discs to see.
3. Possibly the Sony DVD player.

I can eliminate 2 of the 3 possibilites easily. I am not up to buying a new DVD player when I can compress the movies and watch them fine. I will keep everyone poseted. And thanks again for the help.

What I have learned from this experience.

1. A failing burner sucks for burning discs.
2. See one above.

As to my testing. I burned 3 movies

Friday Night Lights
The Fogotten
The Grudge

on Memorex DL and Verbatim DL. I tried to play all 3 movies on my Sony DVP-NS425P DVD player.

Playback:

The results were identical. All movies regardless of media played but, I had significant issues at the layer breaks. I will note that they all played fine on the burner that I used to make the discs.

Burning:

I was using a Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWlD2 which is basically a LiteOn SOHW-1673S
I used DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.
I set book type to DVD-ROM.
The memorex discs had a max burn rate of 2.4x
The Verbatim discs had a max burn rate of 4.0x
Both media was "supposed" to be 2.4x.
Bottom line the Verbatim discs burned better, but does it really matter if I can't play them on my DVD player.

Where do I go from here:

1. There is no new firmware for my DVD playe yet. So that will not help.

2. My media test in my opinion is inconclusive I can't rule out my player as just not being up to snuff.

3. Off to Best Buy when I have the time to test a few of these discs in the players on display.

Well there you have how things turned out. Any comments? Anything that I should have done differently? Any additional testing that I should try?

Thanks for all the help and comments.

IMHO what I think is that it is not that the disks are burned badly I believe that the trouble lies more in the standalone and whether they can handle the new dual layer disks. I have two players that have no problem with these disks and play them flawlessly, and two that have freezes and stutters. I am purchasing a new DVP-NS50P/S Progressive Scan DVD Player from WalMart today to test out my theory, specs state it will handle dual layer and WalMart has a generous return policy in case it does not. As I said just my two cents :~)

Those DL disc are made by Ritek and should be fine if it weren't for the dye app. Memorex contracts only for the cheapest dye and app. Don't trust Memorex either single or DL discs.

FYI, No one ever said that you couldn't get Memorex to burn; we just said you'll have more trouble with it than any other media. As Memorex's DL discs hasn't been out that long we don't know BUT their single layered media had a history of failure to play after as little as 8 months and I had some that crapped out after 1, 1/2 years. You did OK with the burner BUT then again, there aren't that many burners that Memorex can purchase and then add their name.

Their media has a solid track record of being consistently poor. Words to the wise.

Burn on my Friend, burn on . . . .

I have to agree with you all about Memorex. I had a Plexwriter burner in my PC and I burned many Memorex CD-Rs and CD-RWs. These CDs were never able to be read on any other computer after I burned them. The CDs just gave me a UDF Reader error message (which I know was from the crappy Plexwriter) and the CDs themselves were basically worthless after burning. I could only access them from the Plexwriter.

Needless to say I got rid of the Plexwriter and got a Lite-On. And I'm currently researching what brand of DVD and CD media to burn with that new drive.

Oh yeah...and thanks for the link to DVD Indentifier. I think that little app will help me figure out whats going on with my DVDs.

Hi dcloud, welcome to aD,

Always use a decent grade media. I suggest something like those discs made by Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, Mitsubishii or RICOH. Unfortunately they are also the discs most plagued by pirate Mfgrs. and for that reason I like dealing with Mertline, Supermediastore OR Newegg who have a great return policy on their products.
I have had great luck with Sony, Phillips, TDK, HP, Maxell +R (not the -R, they cannot be trusted), Fuji +R are fine But -R are not, Ritek, RiData, Verbatim DataLife and, Verbatim DataLife Plus discs are dependable and their prices are extremely reasonable. As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return them with your sales slip OR register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it.

For the best online media stores to shop, try -

Mertline.com
http://meritline.com/

Newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-...

And,

Supermediastore.com
http://www.supermediastore.com/media1.html

I hope that helps some,

Cheers,

Pete
