I am completely new to this and ignorantly I expected just to download the latest version of Nero and make dvd's up from the .mpg files I have on my PC.

However I now realise this is not so easy!!

Please can someone tell me where I am going wrong

I have tried using MainConcept MPEG decoder to convert the files to MPEG2 Nero still won't work.

Do I have to somehow convert these .mpg files to VIDEO_TS.IFO files?

I apologise for my ignorace on these matters and I would sincerely appreciate some help.

Thanks in advance,

HutchyBoy.

Nero should work with .mpg files very well: At Nero Vision Express, click 'add video files', then find and paste the .mpegs and follow the lead from there.
If you cannot paste the files, you probably don't have the necessary codecs. In that case, try download and install K-Lite codec Pack (full version):

Please post again if it still doesn't work.
Good luck!

You do not need the codec pack.
Mainconcept has encoded your videos to (hopefully) DVD compliant mpeg-2 files.
You just need to "Author" them. This is the process of taking the mpg, and making it into the vob's and such, found in the VIDEO_TS folder.
Indeed, Nerovision Express will do this, but it's not recommended.
For a simple autoplay dvd, try ReJig (it's free), but you will have to Demux the mpg into elementary streams first. (Next time, have Mainconcept output elementary streams during encoding, to save this step).
For more advanced authoring, with chapters, menus, etc., you can try DVDLab or TMPGEnc DVD Author, both have 30 day fully functional demos.
There are also a couple of free DVD authoring apps, but they require a steep learning curve.
If you're interested in more, look in the TOOLS section, under Authoring, at http://www.videohelp.com
