I have a hauppage win tv card and im now leaning how to encode from my vcr to divx, the problem that i have is that on some shows (family guy) some scenes look too bright white. This only happens when i use Virtual Dubb to capture the show. But when i watch the show on my computer with out trying to capture it, it lools fine. Is the software that im using? If someone can tell me what i need to ajust, or if they can point me to a better program that would be great.

Virtualdub allows you to apply filters during your captures.
Click video, filters, and play with the "Levels" and "HSV adjust".
Don't go crazy and add more than one or two, or you could end up with dropped frames.

Your Capture Cards Driver has Built in Color,Contrast,Brightness ect Settings that you can adjust before you capture...

While in V-Dubs Capture mode go to "Video" to "Source" and under "Device Settings" is were you will find all of the Image settings , This way you won"t use any extra CPU power while Captureing....

Cheers

PS: Also Try to Capture in a YUV format Like YUY2,YV12 or UYUY because that saves your Capture card from converting the YUV data to RGB which can cause changes in the Luma and Chroma (Brightness and Color) as all BT8*8 Based cards nativly capture in YUV 4.2.2 Color format and will convert it to RGB if you select that option in the Capture software.....
