I have recently aquired 100 tdk 8x and higher compatibility. Beside the expected toss them in the trash reply is thier anything I can do to make these a little better? They ID as CMC Mag, Mybe burn at lower speed? They seem to burn ok.no coasters yet, will they deteriorate with time or will the ill effects be with the burning process. Basicaly when will I know if they are trash? Thanks, ---zen-->

well, unfortunately, you KNOW they are trash when you identified the media ID code on them when you got home and put it into your dvd drive :P

to make the most of it though, i suggest burning at a lower speed than the manufacturer rated 8x. 4x would be acceptable, slower if you would like. as with ALL CMC MAGs, they WILL deteriorate at a faster rate than say a Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim w/ the AZO dye~

i wish there was more i could say or do to get the word across out there to everyone who visits the dvd-media section as to how important HIGH media quality is to the success of a "good burn/backup" but, this is how we ALL had to learn in the beginning, when i was starting out, i had crappy princos/fake tys/and most other crap in between, i learned the hard way just as you have...i guess it's a trial of life, until you've been burnt (no pun intended) you will not switch to GOOD media (check my sig. for suggestions).

best of luck to you in the future, your case right here is one of the ONLY reasons why i never suggest TDK media to a newbie, for the simple fact that you could likely get the dreaded CMC MAG discs that YOU have unfortunately come upon~ im sorry for your misfortune, but, if buying locally dvd+r...go with FUJI or SONY (made in japan) those are both confirmed by me personally as being genuine Taiyo Yudens, and you will not go wrong w/ TYS~

have a good one~

They will probably deteriorate with time. How long - it depends on how old they are. The could be 6 months old before you even bought them. The CMC I have still play fine and are about 1 year old however there's several I haven't played so they may not.
Copying them is another thing usually Decrypter will do it but I have one or two so far it won't. You can try burning them at a lower speed but I doubt that will make them last longer. Mine were burned at either 2x or 4x.
If you decide to use them in my opinion I would only use them for movies I don't care about or for data.

@ zen

I read somewhere that storing backup media will prolong the lifespan of questionable media. Something about the dye running. Deterioration of low quality media (mainly cmc mag identified media) is due to several factors to include: multiple plays, exposure to sunlight(heat), or bad handling. More importantly when you can have a look around the forums and you will see most members prefer verbatims and ty02 with AZO dye (better quality). A lower burn speed in my experience gets better results than burning at the maximum your burner or pc will allow.

not a lot i can add to the other replies as they've summed it all up. All i can really add is to do as they advise, then see my sig (in case you got a Liteon or Plextor drive) and PIF scan one or three of them and see if you've got any decent copies out of them.

Sorry you were burnt by the CMC curse :)

Hey if you can trade those TDK's I would.:) I have never had a problem with Fuji or Sony. Best Buy has Fuji on sale I think for $39.99 for 100. Look for made in Japan.

i backup ALL my personal collection at home, i am what you call a DVD collector~ people collect stamps, rare coins, baseball cards, etc...i collect DVDs~ :)

while my wife and i do not have children yet, i want to have a good backup copy of my ENTIRE collection so that in the future, i will have something to remember this point in my life from~

i guess im quite the eccentric and overly excessive~ but, this is my hobby~ i've been purchasing dvds since dvd format became popular YEARS ago...my ongoing project of filling my entire home theater room is getting closer and closer~ :)

i have used 1 click dvd a few times.the quality is pretty good and it is fast.the only problem ive had is a few of the movies wouldnt play in all of my dvd players, but that has only happend a few times.so for those movies i ran it back through decrypter and they played fine. the only reason i would use it is because of the speed.i can rip and burn in about 30-35 mins, with decrypter, shrinh and Nero it takes about an hour.

I used 1 click DVD - I'm assuming it's the same as DVDoneclick. I deleted it. I'm too used to Shrink and Nero especially. They have more options. With 1 click it was either the full disc or movie only. But I do have a friend that loves.

Thanks, guys for everything. I might have to try that Nero, I have had such good luck with shrink/decrypter, I don't think I should change at all. I have dvdxcopy as a backup. Please no hate mail over that. I have never had any prob's with it either. Well beside movie only or full disc what other things would you like to do? ---zen--->

Try Recode IMHO once tried you'll never go back. With Recode or Shrink to lower compression and keep full menu functionality I can make the extras a still picture. I can also preview them to make sure I'm doing the right file. I can also pick and choice audios to help with compression. These are just a few things. No hate mail from me with DVDXcopy it was the 1st app I used however I have since deleted it also.
I mainly use AnyDVD and Nero Recode.
