Okay I ordered the dvd-r ty02 (2 50 pk bundles) but when I ran them through dvdinfopro and dvdidentifier they read as ty03. Of course I ran to burn 1 as a test and came out flawlessly. Also ran a pif scan and no errors. Anyway was wondering if anyone can verify they are good blank media as I've only seen ty02 praised. Got some fujifilm dvd-r as well and they read as ritekg05. Not sure what that means but they burn pretty good as well. My question is did i get some fake taiyo yudens (03) or are they as good as ty02.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

do a deeper search and the media code you are referring to are for the 8x dvd-r TYs...the TYGO2 in my signature...the ones you are speaking of are the NEW 16x dvd-r, with the TYGO3 coding~ those are EXCELLENT media, just rated at a faster speed than the TYG02 which are 8x.

my friend gave me a few to run some tests, as he purchased them from amazon as well, they are indeed the 16x dvd-r with the TYGO3 coding. i had very very little kprobe errors, one of the best scans i have ever done actually, so, rest assured..you got yourself some AWESOME media~ :)

also regarding your fuji RITEKG05 coding, those are MADE IN TAIWAN, while i personally have had good results with ritek media with that same coding, i no longer use them since i have switched to TY and Verbatim~ :)

my backups from over a year ago still playback flawlessly on the RitekG05s...so, they seemingly work pretty well for you too~ which im glad to hear, a LOT of members complain about Ritek because their particular burners do not like them, but every one of my 6 burners will accept them and i've had very little trouble with Ritek~ those are made in taiwan btw as well~

hope that clarifies some of your questions~ :)

the TYG03 are actually of EQUAL or HIGHER quality than the TYG02s (based on kprobe results), nothing you need to worry about there...i stick with my TYG02 only because i will never need to burn anything at 16x, i keep all my burns @ 8x now~ no problems, no freezing, no pixillation~ :)

Ok thanks kivory i was in the middle of searching and saw your replies pop up. Amazon is okay by me since they lived up to their 7 day delivery promise.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

hehe...if your search had "Taiyo Yuden/Verbatim/TYGO2/TYGO3/YUDEN000T02/MCC003" in it, ultimately, it will always direct you back to ME on after dawn~ LOL :)

i have recently become the authority on TY related issues by my peers here on AD. some people disagree with me, but i have quite a few members that support what i say about Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim on here, so the choice is yours. so next time save yourself some time and i will eventually get around to answering specific TY questions for ya~ :P

i have thousands of burns with TY media under my belt, so i speak from experience~ just want to help out all those that are new to the media scene as much as i can~ i have gained SOOO much info from the good people here on AD, it's about time i gave some of it back for others to learn from~ :)

good luck

kivory666,

As you mentioned being the TY authority, perhaps you can clear something up for me. Aside from speed performance, are there any reliability differences between the Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02?

I am archiving some videos that I hope to keep for 20+ years and was curious to which media to use. Does the speed correlate to the quality of burn and/or its long term reliability? I think I'm sold on TY, just not sure which ones to get. Thx.

hi ddc, welcome to AD~

to answer your question, there is no REAL correlation between the different rated speeds on TY media based on quality/reliability. the older TYG01s (4x dvd-r) are just as good as the TYG02s (8x dvd-r) and it's just a personal preference of mine to use the YUDEN000T02 (8x dvd+r) format~

the reason i use the dvd+r format is because i have noticed that booktyping the dvd+r to dvd-rom ensures 100% compatibility/playback on MY standalone dvd players. there are many threads reviewing the actual differences between dvd-r and dvd+r, the quality, the compatibility, etc...with many varied opinions among them~

my suggestion to you would be to just be careful to make sure you are getting AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yudens, regardless of rated manufacturer speed, ALL of them have to abide and PASS Taiyo Yudens' VERY strict standards of quality before they are sold to the public~ their quality control from my knowledge is one of the STRICTEST in the business of optical media manufacturing~

so, to sum it up, you can't go wrong with TYS if you want a long archival life for your data/movies, your decision should be more so based upon how fast YOU would like to personally burn. i burn ALL mine @ 8x with flawless results~ i even burned the TYGO3s (16x dvd-r TY) @16x and then slowed it down to 12x with GREAT RESULTS in picture quality, can't tell much difference between the two speeds~

i can't say i've been burning dvds for 20 years so as of right now, i can't guarantee you they will last that long or even LONGER...but, i can safely say that i trust my most important data and movie backups with TY with NO doubt in it's quality and reliability YEARS from now~ i do have some TY from about 2 years ago and they STILL playback the same way as they did the 1st day i burned them, so that is a good indication to me personally that they will last for MANY years to come~ hope that reassures you somewhat. good luck with your TYs~ whichever you end up chosing to go with~ :)

Hey thanks for the detailed answer. I didn't think the speed rating played out differently on the reliability front but I wasn't sure. I need to think about the cost/speed tradeoff some more. I did see some good deals at bestbuy and supermediastore.

As I'm a newbie, actually I haven't even bought my dvd burner yet, I wanted to review as much on the media as I know this is the most critical item for my archiving and peace of mind.

BTW, I'm leaning toward the benq dw1620 and getting the TY or Fuji dvd+r to start out with. Any chance the 4x burn at 8x or 8x burn at 12x or higher with this burner? Wishful thinking... Thanks again.

you are welcome ddc~ :)

while i do not own a benq, i know quite a few members/friends on here RAVE about it's quality and reliability~ i trust their opinions on that burner, but, unfortunately, i have 6 burners that i currently use to keep me busy for my purposes of backing up~ i am sorry i can not offer you any PERSONAL advice on that burner, but, i am certain that it is a very solid/reliable burner from what my friends have said about it~

im pretty sure that "overburning" can be done with this burner and considering your choice on media, im almost POSITIVE that this can be done fairly easily, if not automatically if you set your burning program to MAX speed~ :)

please come back and find me if there is anything else i can help you with regarding TY media, i am ALWAYS more than willing to help out someone that is just starting out~ i wish you the best of luck when you get your dvd burner, i am glad that you are doing so much research on media even before you have your burner, you are going to be very pleased with the results once you start...because your media of choice can't be beat~
