I don't understand it. I've been following this guide: http://www.rita.lt/guides/GKnot_DVDtoAVI.htm and up until now its been great. I set up everything back up the movie, but sometimes Gordian Knot won't follow the target size.

I went ahead a reinstalled version .35 on a new machine. Followed the instructions exactly as I had done before. I set the target size to 1400 MB (its Lord of the Rings), but when I come back 4 - 5 hours later, the movie is at a horrible 156 MB. The quality is atrocious and I feel like there's nothing I can do. I have plenty of space on my hard drive, I don't have ANY limitations setup. And I'm making sure all my settings are right, yet it still puts out the wrong size.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong????

Dunno bgenora, but it works so you must be doing something wrong.
When I do a 2-pass rip with XviD, I get a small file after the first pass. It is named AVI but you're not supposed to play it, it's just to setup the second pass.
So you must not quite have the hot setup yet...

LoL, wish I could agree but doesn't work that way :^)
What are you using, DivX or XviD?
Hard to say, but don't worry we'll figure out what setting needs changing - we'll get you fixed up.
Hey that's a pretty nice guide. Cross-reference it with a guide from Doom9
http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm
and double check all your settings.
Make sure and setup your default 1st and 2nd pass settings from the main GKnot screen (options). Later, right before encoding, you can adjust these for unusual last-minute modifications to suit a particular source.
I have a hunch that your problems might be in codec encoder setup; GKnot itself is pretty foolproof for running a 2-pass rip.
If you still cannot get it running, ask back here and tell me what codec you're using.

So I changed my encoder settings (I use XviD) so it would match up like the one on doom9. Sure enough it worked and I had a decent rip of Return of the King.

However, when I went to do it again with another movie (fellowship of the ring), it did just like before, made a smaller version of the movie with horrible video quality, roughly 345 MB in size. No settings were changed, in fact I even left sound quality, movie target size, and other options the same. All I did differently was open up the Fellowship VOBs, save the project, opened it up in GordianKnot, and then did the "Save & Encode".
