When you first open WMP you will be given the opportunity to make it your "Default" player if that's what you want. When you do that it will ask you choose what type of files you want it to recognize, choose everything.

You should be able to "Browse" to the folder where your DVD folder and click on it. You will have to open it at any rate to be able to read from the guide.
Perhaps you should read up on whatever you're trying to download. It will have a tutorial, usually under the "Help" or "?" tab, read through it. If it won't answer your questions, lose it, it's not worth having.
Here's a Free media player that works, use the icon under the "Download" "D" to begin.
Actually, it's nice to see that you did read up on the issue. You're right, MPC needs a dvd decoder to play dvd's, just like any other media player. Unfortunately, there are very few players out there that come with a decoder. You have a couple options; powerdvd and windvd both have them. I would personally recommend the K-lite codec pack, which allows MPC to play dvd's, as well as just about any other media type out there. None of these are free, if you're actually interested in legally purchasing them. I've heard rumors that Disney dvd's came with a decoder hidden somewhere on the disc, so if you feel like searching a little, that might be a nice bet. Otherwise, try www.thepiratebay.com for a torrent of one of the the aforementioned products. Good luck.
As I already said it includes all decoders required, so no need for Cyberlink or intervideo filters.
It works fine right out of the box here. No need to install anything. Just drag the VIDEO_TS folder or load the disc from the file menu. Windows I think comes with MS's DVD navigator filter.
