Ok I just got my modded GC and it looks cool, it has the Viper GC chip preinstalled with Cobra Version 1.2, it also has the new Replacement XCM GC case which takes full sized DVD?R?s, it also has a DB25 Male Serial port sticking out of the back. I called the place that I got it from and asked why the Serial port and they said that it is so I can link my GC to my computer and backup games. My question to all you experts out here is how do I do that?

wow thats simple you need a program that communicates to the gamcube via the seral port but you may have a problem if it is a serial port connection and you are running windows xp you cannot comunicate with the serial port at all in windows xp you can only in windows 95 and windows 98 and windows me and 2000

so if it is a serial port you are screwed if you are running windows xp

if you are running windows xp and it has a parallel cable connection then you are just fine but in most cases in order to back up games on the gamecube you need

phantasy star online and a network adapter and a computer streaming application for gamecube software

Ok so I guess I can't use the Serial Port because I am running windows XP. I have a network adapter so what you are saying is I still need to get a copy of Phantasy Star Online.

I can use my printer port with windows xp. I don't see how that's a problem. You just have to change something in the bios to make the printer port communicate the right way.

Incorrect. The DB25 port on the back is simply for flashing the chip with a new bios, such as the cobra 1.2 if it has not been already. To dump gamecube games, you still need BBA and something like GCOS ripped.

Unless I'm sorely mistaken though....

And no you don't need Phantasy Star online. If you turn on and look at the cobra bios, itll say "DIRECT BOOT." Simply selecting that with a burn in your drive will start it.

Enter the mind of the dragon.

ok let me explin in more detail

inside windows xp to stop hacks and cracks to microsoft products and to create problems with mod chip flashers windows xp sets all ports to read only you need to go into your computers bios settings and set the printerport and the serial connection to bi directional most computers you purchase now already have this turned on but older pc's do not so you will have to turn this on inorder to communicate correctly i had this problem while trying to flash a mod chip for a xbox i thought the mod chip was bad come to find out i had to set it to bi directional so it can write and read from the mod chip

Thanks

birdy,

you need to unzip the ngcdev onto a dvd, then load it into your modded gamecube. when you boot with cobra 1.2, you need to load ngcdev through your file manager.

check out Mod that Cube FAQ at ngcdev.com

the files size should be about 1.5 GB. it should take about 18 to 20 minutes to transfer. follow the rules for burning iso and dvd's in the Mod that Cube Faq, it's invaluable. the only thing I can think of is bad media, but you used the same for loading the ngcdev DOL. I hope you didn't tweak your laser!? what is your exact setup?

yep, there's nothing unusual about unzipping it. if you are having problems, download the file from another source or I can email it to you.

Okay psxzombie you sound like you know what you are talking about. My last question was actually a mistake. I meant to ask you, do you unzip the iso file that you get after ripping the game.

My other question has to do with something you said.

How do you load the ngcdev onto the gamecube without flashing
the modchip (viper)?

NO, at this point you burn the ISO with Nero onto a mini-DVD. Check Mod that Cube for setting (mainly, load ISO and click Finalize session)

I am assuming you flashed the Viper with Cobra 1.2 already. If this is done, then the Cobra menu loads upn bootup. Then you can load ngcdev ripper via the file manager.

If you haven't flashed the Viper, then you need to hook up your programmer via your PC parallel port and load vflasher and choose cobra 1.2 bios. When done, load ngcdev after booting.

All of this is in the Mod that Cube Faq.
Let me know if you need more help. Also tell exactly what equipment you have, files loaded/flashed, file on hand...

Ok this is what?s happening, I have a modded GC I bought it premodded so it should be done right. It has the Viper GC chip in it with Cobra Version 1.2 it also has the new Replacement XCM GC case which takes full sized DVD?R?s. I downloaded the ngcdev ripper 0.2a onto my computer (running windows xp home) I unzipped it and burned the DOL file using Nero to a full size DVD-R. I put that DVD into my GC and went to Disc Explorer and pressed the A button, it asked me to press A to stop disc so I did, then it says to insert original disc and press A, so I put in my original game disc and pressed A, then it has a logo of the game on the top of the screen and says ?go http://192.168.1.32/backup.iso? so I go to my computer and type in that address and a download screen pops up and I save it to my desktop in a GC folder. It takes about 30min to download and the file is 1,425,760 KBs. When it is done I open up Nero burning rom and I burn the ISO file to a DVD-R this takes about 20 min. then when I put that DVD-R into the GC and go to Direct Disc Boot I get the GC logo and then a Red box that says "The disc could not be read. Please read the NINTENDO GAMECUBE Instruction Booklet for more information." I have tryed it with about 5 different types of media including a mini DVD-R. I hope I have given you enough info so you can help me, I just don't know what to try next. and no I did not tweak my laser. Thanks

I don't have this option called file manager in cobra 1.2 (well I don't think I do).

When I load up Cobra it looks like this
Direct boot disk
Original Bios
Configuration menu
Disk explorer
Cheat code
Change disk
Change Disk

ok, so you guys have an ISO on the computer.

all I can think of is make sure you are finalizing the ISO. I'll check the Mod that Cube Faq and post it, if you haven't read it already.
Quote:
Simply start Nero, pick ?Burn Image? and select the ISO image you would like to burn. If you have a .GCM image, simply rename it to .ISO. Always make sure to select ?Finalize the Disc/Session? before burning.
other than that, I dunno what the problem can be. I also read where the GC cannot recognize the end of the disk when using full size DVD's, so some people have traced an outline around a mini DVD onto the full size so the GC laser knows where to start/stop(?) Might as well try that out on one of your previous coasters! If the mini DVD didn't work, possibly bad media, Ritek G04 seems to be the standard at newegg or office depot.
Good Luck.

well this stinks, I just went out to Office Depot and got some mini DVD-R's and when I run the DVD Identifier it says that they are made by Ritek Corp. and the Manufacturer is Ritek G04. so if I look at the Media issues page on Mod that Cube's site it says that they should work, but I still have the same problem, so it must not be a media issue. I still get the red box that says "The disc could not be read. Please read the NINTENDO GAMECUBE Instruction Booklet for more information." Can someone please help me, PLEASE

what game did you backup? I did Super Monkey Ball 2 and Nascar 2005. I am unsure if Viper works 100% with all games. Someone posted that some burners are not very good. He recommended Pioneer and Nec, and burning at 2x. I have a NEC. You definitely clicked finalize disk on Nero?

I tryed to backup my original of paper mario and pikmin 2, I also tryed it on two different burners, one is in my laptop it is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-820S it burns DVD-R's DVD+R's and RAM, the other is in my desktop it is a Memorex DVD+/-RW True 8Xn, and yes I did finalize the disk and burned at 2X speed.

That's strange, I don't know if I agree with what Cubico said about burners. However, I have a NEC. I haven't heard problems with other burners. Since, you didn't do the mod, perhaps the store tweaked the laser? If the originals work, the backup shouldn't be a problem. Also, you burned ngcdev and loaded that perfectly.

The last resort, bad viper chip? The viper sounds fine, it load bios and ngcdev... If you know someone local with a modded GC, try out the backups there. or you can send me one :-) (Maryland)

you might have to email the expert... brakken.

birddy44, have you tried mini-DVDs? I'm having the same problem but, I have yet to burn it on a mini. I'm planning on going to the store either latter today or tomorrow to get some. I'll let you know if it works.

Also if you figure something out let me know.
