I have been buying Maxell 8X -Rs (goldtops) and they were made in Japan until recently they switched to Taiwan. You are right no -Rs are made in Japan anymore. Go figure.

I fired off a message to Maxell tech support to ask why. Just wondering if they will reply.

Oh well, I've stocked up on some good quality +R lately; i.e. fuji (made in Japan) and some good Verbatim (made in Taiwan)

:)

thanks for pointing that out movies27, i KNEW eventually we could agree on something~ :P i picked up another spindle of the dvd+r fuji's over the weekend to add to my dvd mountain, PLENTY of the made in japans left over, but for the dvd-r, you are 100% correct, my best buy are COMPLETELY out of the Made in Japans, only Made in Taiwans are left~ :P

this might or might not be EVERYWHERE in the U.S., but at least here in California, MY local best buy only stocks the made in taiwans now~

ALL my Verbatims are made in taiwan and i still have NO problems with those, may i ask, what type of burner do you use movies27? you might want to consider trying the dvd+r Fujis that are MADE IN JAPAN if your burner supports it, i have found my dvd+rs when booktyped to dvd-rom are 100% compatible on ALL standalones that i try them on. just a thought, the fujis dvd+r (MIJ)are YUDEN000T02 coded and are equal or superior to the TYGO2 that you currently use (depending who you ask about the quality of the dvd-r vs. dvd+r format) :)

i have hundreds of the fuji TYG02 dvd-r format so i am not downplaying them, they are great and i have countless flawless burns with them, just thought i'd suggest to you an alternate option if the dvd-r MIJ fujis are no longer available to you~

@ philipman good seeing ya in the midst of supporting good ole' Memorex, while i am obviously in the "other" camp of media, what works for you, TERRIFIC~ best of luck with your future burns~

Go to your local Staples store and look at the Sony -R 10-packs in jewel cases for $4.94 each. All the ones I've seen are made in Japan. If you get lucky they might be TY discs, but even if not they're still made in Japan. They're all 4x discs, so I imagine they're cleaning out inventory.
