DVD inhibits playback slider use

I've run into one or two DVDs that somehow stop me from using the playback slider to adjust the position in the movie. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the one I remember right now. In WMP, I can drag the slider all around and as soon as I let go of it, it pops back where it was. Or if I slick in the slider bar, nothing happens. These functions work fine in all other movies. Of course I only notice this when playing the DVD on the computer, since there's no equivalent on a plain DVD player, and selecting scenes and things like that work fine. Oh, and the same thing happens whether I play the DVD directly, or if I copy it to disk with DVD Decrypter and play it from there.

I've tried searching for info on this, but haven't found anything -- "playback slider" or just "slider" doesn't find anything relevant. I can't think of what other search terms to try.

So my first question: why? I could understand if it were done on the Big Brother flash screen so I had to wait it out, but this is happening on the entire feature film. Is it perhaps an option the DVD producers set and never bothered to turn off because they didn't notice it in DVD player / TV mode? Mostly just curious here.

But my main question is, is there a way to get around it? Playback software which allows me to override this restriction? (I don't mind paying a little, as I've been using only free playback software up to now.) Some program which modifies the copy on disk to turn off some flag?
