How simple is it to get the PS2 to read HDD's that do not come with Final Fantasy XI??? I understand that you need the PS2 modem and a "compatible" hard drive.
Do you just connect the hard drive to the modem and connect the modem to the PS2 and that's it??? (assuming the hard drive is compatible) Or do you need to do something else??? I have a HD and the modem, but the PS2 is not picking up the HD. So i'm trying to figure out if the HD is compatible. Or am I just doing something wrong???
I was also told that there is a disc that you need to format the HD, but i'm really not to sure about that either.

You need Hdloader or HDadvance to recognise the HDD and store games on it.Each time you want to access the games you insert that disc.

Alright, I got the HDD reconized, but when I tried a random game, the HDD did'nt do anything. It crashed formatting the HDD, but when I restarted it, HDLoader showed the HDD as clean. So when I tried a random game, it would ask to put in the disk, but does'nt get past the intializing disc screen. Do I need to use the memory card exploit??? Or any other ideas???
EDIT: I tried the link posted above, and I don't know how to correctly burn the disc, but I have just been making costers. Is there a tutorial or FAQ around that I can find and use??? The one provided is'nt really helping

personally, i found it bothersome to try to burn a cd that might not work. i think there should have been a method to make the cd image, then load it to the drive with winhiip, and load up hda/hdl normally, then run that cd to do the exploit.
my method, use the codebreaker exploit. basically, you setup everything for the exploit, copy the codebreaker save file to your USB device, and use retail codebreaker (i have 8.1) and copy from your usb to your memory card. if you did everything right, just use the trigger disc and you'll be good to go. everything is getting cheaper now a days. my codebreaker 8.1 was 20bux at walmart, and i know there are some cheap old usb drives at walmart too. just look for it. you'll spend a grand total of less than 50bux on that stuff. if money is a very big factor, i hope someone's tutorials out there can help you do this for free.

Alright, I finally got the PS2 to read the HDD and copy the games, now the games are not playing, none of them.
So far, I have tried mega man anniversary collection, and nothing. Same wit viewtiful joe 2, agian, nothing, I look at the compatiblity list ad it says they they'll work, but when I try them, nothing. just a black screen and I cannot reset the PS2 or anything. I cannot tell what version the HD loader might be.
any suggestions???

@O2K are you doing the exploit? or is it a retail HDL? you should try "mode 3" for the games. that usually helps to get the games working. highlight the game, press select. set mode 3 to enabled, and press select to return to the game list. press X or start to begin playing the game. if mode 3 doesnt work, then just assume that your games dont work yet.

no, i'm not using the memory card exploit. i'll try using mode 3, but other games that are rather old don't work either, so i'll use the MC exploit.

if 'old' games arent working, then it could be an issue with the hdd that you're using. i dont know if mode 3 will make a difference in that case.

so try the MC exploit then??? because agian, the offical sony HDD is not working as well. I did a bit of looking for the MC exploit, but it sounds like it's just for using it to play random games and what-not. unless i'm looking in the wrong places or it's a different kind of exploit............

the MC exploit is for doing quite a bit of stuff. if all you want to do is play games from hdd, then just stick to what you're doing and dont worry about the exploit right now. BUT at some later point in time there will be games that you can't just rip to the hdd and keep playing. then you'll need the exploit.
if you have the retail HDL, then i would suggest that you format the hdd one more time and try again. if it crashes again, then the hdd is prob'ly not suitable for your needs. most ppl here will suggest you get a maxtor drive because they usually are the most compatible, and they fit. if you own the games that you have tried to convert, then make sure you dont get any read errors. it should work. just give it one more shot. and if that doesnt work, then you'll need to try a different hdd.

@ps2alert: you need a fat ps2, a network adapter, and a compatible hard drive. keep reading the forums and you'll find links to compatibility info, and other stuff you can do with the hard drive.
PS2 v7 39001 + 64MB MC
200GB Seagate oem
Retail HDA (HDL Fully Patched)
boot = Launchelf 3.4b
exploit = Codebreaker 8.1 method
