PSX games won't boot up on my Ps2

I have a ps2 slim modded with a MARS805SE chip(anyone heard of this chip) and it seems to play any type of dvd backup very easily with no problems. But when i put a regular ps1 backup in the game loads out of the ps2 option menu but then the screen turns black. It's like it knows it's a playstation game but it doesn't get to the load screen. I'm just wondering if i'm not doing something right because my old ps2(different chip) was booting my ps1 backups directly. Can someone help me out???

most mods I know of have a diffrent mode for PS1 games and they need diffrent boot up procedures (ex. hold reset X amount of seconds etc.)

First things first, make sure you are using the correct boot sequence like WEStar said.

For most chips, this is how you boot a ps1 cd...

1) Insert the ps1 game
2) Hold reset button until ps2 shuts off
3) Now to start the ps2, hold the reset button down until the very first screen comes up, about 2 seconds to be exact, then release the reset button. Try this a few times....

If it does not work, try holding the reset button down for maybe a little longer when starting your Ps2 up, but not to long otherwise you will disable your chip (holding down for 5 sec. or more)

If that does not work, try using QUALITY media and burn your games at 1x using Clone CD.

Hey thanks for the help guys. I got it working now thanks to your ideas. It seems that the holding reset or pressing reset twice method both work just fine. Now to go retro playstation..... :D
