Hi. Extremely green to DVD ripping. Managed to get the basics, but it's the details that threw me off. What I've done so far:
1) Ripped/transfered *.vob files from DVD onto hard drive into one merged *.vob file using DeCSS.
2) Converted *.vob into *.avi files using DVD2AVI
3) Used TMPGEnc to encode into *.mpeg.
Correct so far, I hope? Anyway, everything went smoothly until I tested the end product. Quality of mpeg is total horsecrap. I'm guessing I screwed up those technical what-have-yous like video compressing, frames, buffer, ratio and bla bla bla. Could someone give me some info, or direct me to a detailed guide on how to use DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc? And I do mean DETAILED. I'm completely brain-dead when it comes to all that technical jargon.
In the meantime, I will continue to muck around with the ripping until someone is kind enough to put me out of my misery. Thx.
By the way, I tried those links dRD put up on the other threads. I can't seem to get into the sites. Will try later, but in the meantime, some alternate help?
Hm, first of all, I haven't heard anyone to actually use DeCSS for ripping for a looong time, it's kind of antique program that basically just started the whole DVD ripping mania. But that shouldn't matter, as VOBs are VOBs in any case -- your problem is very likely in the actual encoding, as that is the only phase that actually changes the video into something else. Have you used TMPGEnc's templates (for VCD, SVCD and so on)? And if so, you probably know it tooks helluva lot of time to complete.
There's an ideal guide for SmartRipper, AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI & TMPGEnc combo ripping:
Why are you guys wasting time with these programs? Here's one which rips straight to an MPEG2 which you can place straight into Nero and onto a CD!! (VCD or SVCD)
