First of all, I have to say I'm a beginner when it comes to DVD burning. I've started to copy DVDs with my Philips 8631 burner and using DVD decrypter and DVD shrink. I first used Taiwan Fujifilm DVD-Rs from Best Buy. These worked ok on my PS2 and one of my standalone DVD players, but were a little fuzzy at times. When I tried it in my Toshiba DVD/VHS TV combos, it said incorrect disk. I figured the problem was the media, so I bought some Taiyo yuden 16x DVD-R from Amazon. I'm assuming they are legit since they have the code TYGO3. For some reason these disks only write at a max of 4x even when set higher and still do not play in my toshiba combo tv. Even these TY disks appear fuzzy at times in my other players, especially during the beginning of the movies. Could there be some other reason why all of this is happening?
media is not the culprit here...i have read NUMEROUS problems with that particular dvd burner...the only suggestion i can give you rather than the obvious (get another burner) is to MAKE SURE you have the updated firmware for your burner.
the reason your 16x TYs are not burning faster is because you need to update firmware for your drive to be able to recognize the newer/faster media correctly~ :)
hope that provides you with a good start, let us know what happens...check my sig. if you WOULD consider getting a new burner, i have just read SO MANY bad reviews on that make and model philips...mostly from it being very unreliable installed from the factory from Dell~ DOZENS of people have called Dell and RMA'd that drive for the NEC~ and their problems just magically went away after that~

I am always prepared to recognize that there can be two points of view - mine and one that is probably wrong - John Gorton
The fuzzy part is probably caused by too much compression or you're not useing quality settings in shrink or both. Shrink is great free software but there are other retail encoders that are much better. Here's a few RB/CCE (best under $2000), DVDCopy3, Clone DVD2, and nero recode2. Try backing up movie only and use the quality settings.
I've read of some problems with phillips drives in Dell systems also. Maybe you can flash it to some benq f/w. You could check here. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92 Phillips and benq are made by the same company and I love my benq.
yes i agree with getting a new burner i would stick with Plextor ,Pioneer , NEC or Lite-on i use a Plextor and its a great burner .also the Fujifilm DVD dash R will ID out as prodisc which arent very good media the TY are the way to good kivory666 knows his stuff when it comes to TY blank media so def. listen to him. lets us know how things work out
