I really need help. I have been reading forums for about two weeks on how to softmod my xbox and install a new 80gb HD. Its a 1.6 version its not modded in any way and I needed a way to do this without using a memory card, without the games mech assault or 007, and without using a chip cause I read that xbox versions 1.6 put a lot of stress on a little cable when you have a hardmod. So I finally decided I was going to hot swap it and using xboxhd I was going to make a backup of my original HD and then install the new one. I think I made many mistakes in the process. First of all when I burned my linux cd I read many times that in the eeprom folder I had to put config magic's eeprom, then in the C and E folders I had the files of a friend's softmodded HD I had retreived by ftp, they were bert and ernie fOnts... it had unleashX and xbmc... etc. After making the cd I proceded to doing the hot swap, it went perfectly, the xbox unlocked my original HD and I could access the files through 'xbrowser' in the xboxhd linux program. So first of all I went into the xboxhd program and picked -----1) Boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default)------ 6) Generate HD Key (requires eeprom), this gave me the hd key and the hd password. Then I went to ----3) Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities then I chose to lock the hd with the password generated by the bin file and that set the master password to XBOXSCENE after I did this I unlocked it and went to the 'xbrowser'. In the C folder on my CD I had the softmod files of my friends HD so I could simply write those to my new 80gb HD and I never wanted to change anything on my stock HD, I just wanted to make a backup just in case you never know. But when I was in 'xbrowser' I was going to hit the F3 button with lets you see whats in the file (cause I was curious) and I hit F4 (most stupid mistake from all the other mistakes I made), F4 said EDIT, so I got a black screen and I started pressing delete or exit because I wanted to go back to the 'xbrowser' and nothing happened so I was getting kind of desperate and I started pressing all the keys on my keboard finally I had to turn off my pc and restart again. When I went to the 'xbrowser' I had renamed ALL the files on my stock HD, I do mean all, everything, TODO. The only folder left untouched was the Audio folder. I was about to have a heart attack because I wanted to keep that HD because I play on xbox live and I was planning on switching Hard Drives everytime I wished to play. So goodbye xbox live. I didn't know what to do so I went to the xboxhd menu and I got the one that said ------2) Rebuild C-partition on existing Xbox-drive--- I was like ok I wont be able to play live but at least I will make the softmod. So I started putting the files I had on my CD on my stock HD without having my backup because I renamed everything. BIG MISTAKE. After I did this I locked my HD and connected it back to my xbox. I booted up and got error 13, I rebuilded my C partition again. Now the xbox boots up, but never goes into the ms dashboard, it just stays in the big X at the boot, but I get no errors, no error 5, no error 6, no error 13. It just stays there. Then I read that you have to use your own eeprom and thats the one I should have burned on the cd. Now I don't know what to do, I have no backup to look for my original eeprom, and my stock HD has the files of another HD from another XBOX. If anybody knows what I could do to fix my xbox, I don't care if I have to put a Chip, I just want it to work again. I hope there is a chance. Its the first time I have ever done this and I will never do it again, I promise.

ya i definately think your gonna have to chip it now.

i hope someone knows more on this and can tell ya otherwise but i dont think so.
also keep in mind that you have a 1.6 xbox and you are more limited in what you can do compared to other versions.

but anyway I say put a mod chip in it. I just hope you didnt permanently kill it.

if you can lock and unlock the drive using the original HD password, i think, you should be able to put back the MS files and be okay. try putting an older dashboard on the drive. xboxhdm says not to use the softmod patch unless you have a kernel below 5530 and dashboard below version 4920. check limewire for xbox dashboard 4920. if you cant find it there, then go here to download the torrent:

http://xbox.udp.at/index.php?a=dl&id=166

you will need a bit torrent program like Azureus to download the file.

goodluck.
