Hello everyone,
I use DVDShrink, and installed Nero Recode 2 yesterday just to see what it's like.
I didn't see much difference in the end result, and they are both easy to use.
Of course DVDShrink is free, which is a bonus :)
Anyone prefer one than the other ? And why ?
What are the big difference between both ?
I know that Recode will be updated, and not DVDShrink, but for now, they both seem to do pretty much the same thing...
Curious Dude...

They look alike because they are both creations of the same guy. He quit updating Shrink when he went to work for Nero.
The biggest difference is the ripping feature. Shrink can and Nero can't.
Most of the other differences are just the Nero specific GUI and the typical Nero features that a few of the other programs use as well. Burning ROM to burn with, etc.

The merging feature is also very nice.
The big difference is the encoding time.
WTF... You cant use any HTML tags in here...

It's been a while since I've used Recode. I like Shrink because it works for me most of the time. I have used Decrypter on a few to get past the structure protection though. I usually get a movie completed in about 20-30 minutes using Shrink and Nero, Movie only. I'm happy with the results. I do need to get Recode going... As a matter of fact I've got Meet the Folkers sitting on my HD so now would be a good time!
RIP DVD DECRYPTER

Recode vs Shrink......hmmmmm. I like Shrink because you can COMPLETELY take off the menus, extras, etc of a DVD. But on Recode it make you put a picture or a color or something in those spots. Thats dumb to me. Is there a better option for that?

Recode2 will do everything DVD Shrink will do (except rip) and a bit more. You can reauthor the dvd and still have a functional menu.

With Recode you can do just the main movie. The Recode intro screen has an option to "Recode Main Movie to DVD".
When you select this option it will import the main movie title only. In the case of meet the Fockers there are two main movie titles so I had to choose one or the other.
This is very much like reauthoring in Shrink.

Hello arniebear,
Thanks for the link, that was a great comparision...
So I guess for now, FREE vs $$$, I guess free still wins for now.
Unless Recode 3 comes out in the future with major new features, I think DVDShrink will stay very populor !
Thanks for your input !

I got my copy of Recode2 from a nero6 oem suite 3 cd rom that I bought online for $8.00 free shipping. Do a google and you might be able to find it cheap. Make sure it's nero6 oem suite 3 because it doesn't come with suite 1 and suite 2.

Cynthia, Yes the Merging Titles is a great feature to have but Nero have acknowledged this feature has not worked since the launch of Nero 6. They are supposedly working on a fix which hopefully we will see soon. elamont & Mort81 you say Recode does everything Shrink does except ripping. Am I missing something here? I have not seen a way that you can place a picture, colour or anything else for that matter in place of videos. Shrink can but I could not see anywhere on Nero this can be done. If there is a way, please educate me as I have missed it and would use Nero Recode 2 much more than Shrink. As I said I could be wrong (I hope I am) but I can't see where you do this.

Click on whatever you want to remove and click on disable. You can then replace it with slide show, custom picture, or custom color. You can browse for custom picture or use default. You can also select a color of your choosing.

Thanks Cynthia. I should have expalined further. The Merge facility looks like it works but when you view the DVD result where the tiltles are joined there is a pause before starting the new title. Refer to this link where this is discussed in more detail and acknowledged as a problem by Nero. Copy and paste this link in your browser to see this:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=137624#137624
By the way (when working) this is a feature that Shrink does not have when making comparisons between the two. Thanks Mort81 for pointing in the right direction with replacing videos with still pictures etc. I will try this out, as I was going to ask Nero for this feature. Glad I checked here first.

Your welcome Lionel. I don't use DVD Shrink or recode2 on a regular basis but have played around with both (mostly shrink). I primarily use dvdremake to edit and RB/CCE to encode.

Thanks Mort. If you ever come across a program that Seamlessly allows you to join titles without any noticeable pause let me know as who knows how long Nero will be with this fix as apparently they have a long list of fixes for next release which have higher priority so not sure if this one will make it through.
