How do LOL /FoV/etc encode their XVid's so well?

Its a question Ive been meaning to ask for a while.

These guys can take an MPEG2 TV stream and convert it to XVid with nearly no artefacts at a bitrate of 1000kbps or less? How? What process do they use?

I've tried it with an origina DVD, pulled into VirtualDub, de-interlaced and run it through XVid in a 2-pass session but it looks nowhere as good as what these groups can do.

Any ideas folks?

Well most of their stuff is 23.976fps Progressive.

De-interlaced in VDub? If you check most files you will find 12bit reported which means that they used direct streaming, so AVISynth filters. Stuff encoded using full processing in VDub will display 24bit. Note that in both cases the file is still internally YV12.

I really don't think the quality of their stuff is all that special, but I guess they have fairly limited time constraints.
