Problems with copying a DVD

DVD recorder: Toshiba DR-1
Burning Software used: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0
Media used for burning: Maxell DVD-RW 4.7gb

Tried to copy a DVD. I tried this two ways:

a) Formatting the DVD disc in the Toshiba and copying the DVD (using DVD decrypter)

and

(1) Copying the DVD disc straight off using DVD decrypter.

The copied DVD cannot be read when I try to play it on the Toshiba. Does anyone have any ideas please?
