Im trying to play an avi file but keep getting an error from windows media player:-

If it really is an AVI then why is the quicktime parser being used? Try something like GSpot on it to detect what it is.

I open it up with Windows Media Plaeyr Classic, and this is the error thatc comes upm, I dont actually know what the quick time parser is to be honest.
I have used GSpot it says its a Quicktime movie but when I try and play it in quicktime it doesnt even come up and just stays with a blank screen. But if I try and play in WMPC and just ignore the error I get picture but no sound, I have most codecs installed.
This is baffeling :S

Exactly. It isn't an AVI it is a mov file. Looks like you have MPC set to use dshow for quicktime and it can handle the video (say Sorenson or MPEG-4 via ffdshow), but not the audio. Audio is probably QDesign, for which I don't think there is a dshow decoder.
Try mplayer, it should be able to handle it. Requires an external codec for qdesign though if it really does use that.

No I have tried with MP (I presume you mean Windows Media Player and not classic?) and it has the same error as WMPC.
I tried to change the extension to a MOV and it had the opposite affect. I could hear the sound but no picture.

Ok, I guess you don't have quicktime set to dshow. Just that MPC uses the extension to decide. Makes sense now that i think about it, since the option to use Quicktime or dshow is next to the file extension options. When set to quicktime, MPC uses the same decoders that Quicktime does. So no video in quicktime = no video in MPC.
No, by mplayer I meant mplayer not windows media player. VLC I believe also supports qDesign audio via an external codec. Once again assuming that it is qdesign.
When you playback via dshow in MPC, what video decoder is being used? If it is FFDShow, then what does it say in the info tab?

celtic_d, I hope you're still active.
I am experiencing the problem described in the thread, and would appreciate assistance in resolving the issue.
I have downloaded FFDShow but am blowed if I know how to use it. I've loaded up the offending .AVI file in WMP and MPC. While it is playing in the media apps, I open "FFDShow audio decoder configuraion" then flick to the "Info and Debug" view. The Source File is always blank.
Can you tell me how to extract the info you need to help me get my beloved avis to make noise?

So scratch that.
I see how FFDShow works. You just start up the movie, and there it is in your systray. Pretty cool.
Except when I play the clip in question, I don't get the FFDShow Audio icon, just the video one. Which tells me that Input FourCC: XviD.
When I start up a functioning AVI, I get both the audio and the video FFDShow icon in my systray.
What's the story with this thing?

I too had this exact same problem with some AVI files (Futurama?)
As stated above, the Qdesign audio codec is used in these weird hybrid movies, and the best (perhaps even only?) way to play these files is in the VLC player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)
It plays the files perfectly.

I had this problem with Futurama. I got it to play in vlc, but lo and behold , the audio on the sucka got out of sync very gradually. By 10 minutes or so it becomes noticable. By 20 minuites or so, it's unbearable. I tried using mplayer with the klite codec pack (I know you're not supposed to use big-ass packs, but I cannot and will not learn how this codec bs works (internet capitalist conspiracy if you ask me!) anyway, sherlock (a program like gspot) says I'm missing:
"ulead dvd video decoder 2"
"Nero Digital AVC video Enc"
"ulead dvd audio decoder 2"
"WMApro over S/PDIF DMO"
Could these be what I need to get things in sync? I've searched all over for this junk, but to no avail. Some sites I've even expect me to pay money for their stupid codecs! What hogwash! That's practically like buying something for the right to use what you already paid for!
Anyhow, maybe I'll try simplifying my codec package someday when I'm ready to get burned again.
