Hello,
I have been a user of Shrink for about 1 year, and was using the previous version(1.7?) without any problems at all. All discs burned fine, no issues ever came up. My system recently crashed and I had to wipe everything off. I had to reload Shrink and Nero 6, but occasionally(1 out of every 5) I am having problems with burning.

I get the message below and don't understand what it means. I am using a Benq burner that is fairly new and have never had problems with, and using hight quality Sony or Memorex 8X DVD-R discs.

The message that keep coming up is 1. Illegal disc 2. Cannot perform start of DVD-at-once.3. Failed burn Can anyone help me to get the program back to "stable" so that this doesn't happen.

I really appreciate anyones help.
Sincerely,
Axlsfury

Try updating your firmware your version is not up to date, and that is why you may be having problems. Your Sony disks are fine to use but Memorex is not always consistent media. The version on your firmware is B7PN it is now B7VN

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=1

Scroll down to where you see your drive listed

Also your Nero needs updated it is now 6.6.0.13 :~)

Thanks arniebear for your guidance.
I tried a firmware update for the drive, but no luck, it keeps spitting the disc out with the same message. I am in the process of updating Nero. If this does not work, what would you suggest? Should I try the previous version of DVD Shrink?
Thanks

You should have something listed under WinASPI. Here's an excerpt from another thread explaining ASPI:

<11>What is ASPI and do I need it?
The term 'ASPI' is an acronym that stands for: Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. All the following terms are synonymous: ASPI layer, ASPI drivers, ASPI interface. The term 'SCSI' [scuzzy] is an acronym that stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD/DVD-ROM drives and CD/DVD burners/writers [hardware]. Software programs such as CD digital audio extractors [commonly known as 'Rippers'] and CD-writing utilities such as CDRWin use/require ASPI drivers to 'communicate with' SCSI devices. Many people don't realize however, that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CD/DVDs.
ASPI DOWNLOAD http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?cat=/Pr...

Also, you seem to be using an outdated version of Nero. 6.6.0.12 is the latest (I think).

This is usually the result of media issues, along with this one:

Just so you know, Memorex is NOT high quality media. In fact, most of what Memorex makes is crap as far as DVDR goes. Good media can make a world of difference. Check into the ASPI thing, get some better media and hopefully these problems stop happening.

If you are going to use DVDShrink get an up to date version available here

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

You should also get DVDDecrypter available here

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...

Guide available here for both programs

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/index.htm
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/

Hopefully, the download of the Nero update will cure your aspi problem, in existing drivers you have nothing, there usually is some driver listed.

I am having no such luck with anything here.
Now nothing will burn in the drive, even after all the updates.
What is happening now is that when it comes time to put the blank disc in, the drive seems to try to read it, and either doesn't even detect it, or send me the error message that it can't burn. Could this be a drive issue?
Any other suggestions?
Cheers

It also sounds as if the drive is "shuffling" when the disc is inserted to burn to, then it just goes off.....

Hello again,
Tried what was suggested to no avail. The drive will recognize a DVD, but not a blank one when I put it in for burning. It seems to shuffle, then goes off.
With respect to the ASPI thing, do I need to do anything after it says to unzip the files?(sorry I am not that technologically inclined)
Why would the drive be able to rip a DVD, but not burn?
Could this be a media issue?
Could this be a drive issue?
My machine was high output before this and now is limp....please help!

Some good news.
I bought a new IDE cable(80 vs 40) and swapped my drive for a brand new one(thank goodness for extended warranty) and haven't had a problem with burning so far(fingers crossed)I suspect it may have been the drive.
Thanks to those who took the time to help!

Interesting development I had to share. It was indeed Media issues that were causing my grief. The funny thing is, that I have burned well over 500 DVDs using Memorex media(I know, throw the tomatos) but I had never, ever had an issue with them until now. Only trouble is that I bought 2 50 packs and they are all toast. Maybe a bad batch, but puts me out some dough. Started using FujiFilm discs and haven't had a problem at all.
Cheers

glad you got it worked out. You should feel lucky you got that many Memorex discs to work out for you. I think I bought a 25-pack at one point and they worked out good, so I got pretty lucky with them too.

This is from a Memorex news article over at CD Freaks

http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/11946
Quote:
For 2004, Memorex retained its position as the number one provider of digital media, outperforming all other brands of CD and DVD media in the United States. For the fifth consecutive year in the CD category and third consecutive year in DVDs, Memorex led its competitors in all blank digital media, in both volume and sales, according to NPD data. Memorex secured a 27 percent share of the CD market based on dollar sales -- about twice that of the number two brand; and a 30 percent share of the DVD market, based on dollar sales -- nearly three times that of the number two brand.
Makes you wonder what the number two brand is, considering it has got to be better than the number one. Know wonder we get so many people asking for help because of media problems :~)
